In process of putting new head on my '57 Massey Harris 555. Calls for 30w, what oil would you use detergent or non-detergent? Why? Thanks.

Trevor is 100% correct - adding to this, your MH calls for a #30 SE (API) recommendation which was the standard from 1972 until 1980. I realize your MH is older than that, but that is the current recommendation. From 72 until 80 is detergent, without doubt. The new oils meet this spec. Having said this, I would also not be afraid in a dirty engine (previously using non-detergent) of using detergent, I would just perhaps double or triple the normal oil change interval for a few changes.

The key to good oil - buy quality. Stick with the people that have actual oil refineries. Many tractor companies bid their oil from year to year and have different oil (yet meeting their spec.) each year.

Trevor's answer is excellent and complete. The only reason I am responding is to reinforce what he said because you will get many and varied answers.

Boy have you opened a can of worms. The answers you get will be on both sides of the fence.

I will through out what I have learnt when other poor fellows asked this question.

Detergent in oil is used to suspend dirt particles that get into the engine so that they either get caught in the filter or get drained out when you change the oil. Nondetergent oils had a tendency to leave deposits (crud)if the oil changes were not performed regularly.

The first detergent oils had some problems (can't remember what they were) but this has been fixed and todays oils are much better than those that were used when these tractors were built.

It is very difficult to find non detergent oil today.

If you use detergent oil in an old tractor that has not been rebuilt and that has not had it before you could free up a lot of old dirt and stand the posibility of causing problems. If you do this to an old engine you should change your oil more frequently to help flush the old crud out of the engine.

My opinion is that if you have rebuilt your enginge you should definately use detergent oil. A lot of things have changed since the manual for your tractor was wrote, some things for the better, like oil technology.

Can't find one thing to disagree with you about, Trevor. But I have no trouble finding non-detergent oil. My local NAPA always has it. Not just 30 weight either.
