Fuel Problem when Pulling a Load - Please Help!

About a year or so ago, while disking up a small hill with my 1969 M670 Super, it started to spit and sputter, eventually died under the load. At that time, I posted a question about why it would do this. Was told that it was probably plugged fuel filter, gas line, or gas tank. I pulled everything apart, wasted alot of gas, and cleaned everything out. I also adjusted the carburator at that time. Everything has been fairly good with the tractor since, but not perfect. Tonight, I was out baling hay for the first time with this tractor. While pulling up the same SMALL hill as before, the tractor began to spit and sputter, eventually died. Can anyone tell me if I need to pull all the gas components off again, or is this more likely a carburation problem? I am so frustrated with this. It only happens while pulling a load (higher RPMs and PTO this time). Please help!

This behavior also is what one would expect with a lean mixture. If the carburetor has adjustable high speed jet, adjust it slightly richer. If a fixed jet, clean it by working a smooth wire through it several times and use lots of compressed air.

You might also try and go leaner with the high speed mix. Just had a problem with my Ollie that I traced down the the carb needle seat being just a bit to small for the engine. With the mix adjusted right and heading for the barn in 6th she ran out of gas in 1/4 mile, several times. Fiddled and when I adjusted it lean to the point it wouldn't pull as hard as it should it'd keep going. 16 miles without a hickup. It wasn't a miss, it'd plain shut off until you lowered the throttle and waited for it to catch up.

I agree with Chuck, I think you need to be looking somewhere else than the fuel system, a weak ignition coil, or as Chuck stated, a faulty condensor, will cause these kind of symptoms.

Where is the fuel tank located. Could it be that gas is going to the carburetor when on the level by gravity and when going up hill the mechanical fuel pump is not working to move the gas. Happened on my 3020 when the tank got below 25%. Changed fuel pump and solved the problem.

Fuel checkes --- Filter in carb. at end of fuel line ---blow back throw fuel line --- sheck fuel bowel --- chech for large pieces of rust in tank

Elect..--- replace condencer ---check spark plug wires --- dist. cap - good luck

Had Super U302 acting the same way for three years. Played the same game with gas tank, carb, fuel filter, ignition switch and wiring. Turned out to be condenser breaking down under load.

Could it be spark plugs? My 806 under heavy load would start to sputter and then would die. It would start right back up and then run fine. Mechanic said the plugs would get so hot they would act like glowplugs and ignite the fuel as it entered the combustion chamber. I put in cooler plugs and haven't had any trouble since. Might not be your problem, might be. Who knows?

May be a venting problem. Check to make sure your gas tank cap vent is not patially plugged.

Aloha, It seems like a float problem. I would check the float to see if it is leaking or saturated. If it is a brass float, give it a shake to see if there is any gas in it. If it is one of those plastic material one's, then it may be saturated with gas. Also check the float height to see if it is in specs because if it is off, there won't be enough fuel in the bowl when you climb a hill.

That sounds like a weak fuel pump. I'm not familiar with your tractor, don't know if it has one. Your not getting much fuel in the carb. bowl. Just enough to keep it running at low load.

A friend of mine has an old H. It does the same thing and every now and then it doesn't want to start. Every time i get involved and end up spraying wd40 in the dist cap and all the symptoms of fuel problems go away. The tractor runs fine until you get it under a hard load then it starts sputtering and looses all it rpms. It only takes a second to spray a water displacer in the distributor cap to see if this is what is happening to you.

Possible bad valve spring?
