I was recently given what is supposedly an early 70's 16HP 2-speed MTD garden tractor/mower. The gentleman who gave it to me has owned it since 1975 or so and he bought it from the original owner. He used it almost every day up to about 2 years ago and it been just sitting around since then. No more!

According to an "expert" here in MO it was supposedly made for MTD by Gilson Brothers but unfortunately all emblems and serial numbers are gone. The tractor is much bigger and heavier than your average tractor mower and has a one-way hydraulic 3-point hitch. The 42" belly mower runs off a two-belt driven PTO at the rear of the engine.

So far I have been able to get all the repair parts I need for the engine and mower but I'm pretty certain that will end if and when I need parts for the final drive. In fact, I do need the hub that the brake disc bolts to.

Does anyone in the Midwest have or know of one like it that I can purchase? Or to share stories about? Or have additional info about? It seems anyone who has had one of these babies is still in love with it.

This tractor has become my main mower for the grass around the house, sharing space in the barn with my Massey-Harris Pony that handles bush hog duty.

Hi yall doin, hot enough. I came by a 1970 MTD Fourteen Hundred tractor with a 42 inch mower deck with the pto just like you described and bought it for $75.00 about 2 months ago. The Fourteen Hundred is the series number which indicates a 14 HP engine, and that is all that number is worth because you can't buy parts by the series number. The model and serial number was scratched off, I discovered that after I bought it. The only number I could get off the tractor was the engine serial number, which is directly below the carborator. That number is a Briggs & Stratton number, so I looked up B&S on the net and found out every thing about the engine. Then I called MTD customer service at 330-220-4683 and told them the serial number of the engine and that the engine looked original, after about 20 minutes they gave me the model number of my tractor and mower deck. Yes you are right, people that have these old tractors love them and like to help others with problems. If you need any more help let me know, I can send you photos of my tractor if you are interested. Later Barry
