Does anyone know anyone who has one of these tractors? My parents have one that they restored and take to local tractor shows. We have never seen another one. My dad says there are very few of them. Just curious and would like to find someone who also has a rare beauty! Please e-mail me with pictures if you have them

I have a 1956 International W400 Diesel. I have owned it since I was 16. I still use it today on the farm. Its main purpose is for raking hay. I am working on restoring it. These tractors are really unique, and also hard to find parts for. Someday I will get it repainted and hope to enter it in some of the antique tractor shows, but I will still always use it.

I had a chance to buy one a year ago last winter for $200 but it needed major engine work. It was a diesel. The fellow finally did sell it to somebody else for more than that but not much more. I could probably find out who bought it if you really want to know. I know they are rare and especially here in NH. Doubt if you'd find another one anywhere near here.

The one I was looking at was a W450, not a 400.

Wendy, yes, my brother-in-law has a W400 (gas) and of course I just love ANY wheatland tractor. Acording to Guy Fay's data book on International Harvester tractors the W400 was only produced for three years, 1954, 1955, 1956. Production totaled 2,070 units with but 9 made in '54. These low numbers make them pretty scarce. By comparison, the Farmall 400 had a production run of the same period totaling over 31,000 units. Of course being in Illinois is even more uncommon. I'm sure with the popularity of tractor collecting, more and more are being brought back from the "western" states. What state is your dad's tractor located in and did he farm with it or aquire it just to restore and show? Is it gas, diesel, or LP? During the '60's and early '70's, we did a lot of haying around our area with a Farmall 560 and an Oliver 88. I remember one year the 560 was "down" and the 88 had the front mounted pipe cultivator on it, so we borrowed the W400 to bale with. It was a whole new experience to bale with a tractor that took ACRES to turn around. If you have any questions, feel free to contact me. Jim T
