I recently purchased a 1971 JD4020 diesel. I need
a front loader but am not sure which ones are
compatible. Also, which manufacture brands are
the best when looking for used loader. And....
what signs of abuse or poor working condition
should I be looking for?

I have a loader for a 4020 for sale. It is a John Deere and came from that tractor. I have a manual for it. The only problem is that it is a trip bucket, but with a little welding you could eaisly put a ram for the bucket. It has a manure bucket on it. I'd like to sell it so I would let it go for $500.00 with a new coat of paint on it. I'm in Ontario Canada so let me know where you are and we can work something out.

Most 4020s have a 148 loader, but if you want a heavier loader, look for a 158. Both have twin bucket cylinders, older ones have only a single cylinder, lighter frames. Anything older or lighter will not stand up. Other companies like Allied, Koyker, Schwartz, Stanhoist, etc. built loaders to fit a variety of tractors. Look for worn pivot pins and their housings, welds on frame members.

Deere's original loader for the 3020/4020 was the
46A, with hydraulic bucket more common. Since it had a yoke frame, took the stress off the engine
rails. 4020's were a bit hard on it, cracking front corner welds on the yoke. It was not the best for high lifting, but worked well. There
may be conflicts, if an after market cab is on
your tractor, since the yoke ran to the rear axle
housing. Model #'s like 47 or 48 may work with a
cab, as I believe they fit the cab on 4230's.
Good luck.
