Hi all, I know a lot of you have experience with crop chemicals and was interested in your input on this situation. We"ve spent the last 10 days diagnosing a serious problem affecting large numbers of our plants. We"ve recently concluded, with the help of our extension office and farmer friends, the damage is from very small herbicide residues (likely Picholran or 2-4,D; both of these target broadleaf plants and have no visible impact on grasses) on the hay we bought and used for mulch.

Several years aog I brought a load of rice hulls form my in-laws in central Ar. to use as mulch on my garden plants in eastern Mo. Boy was that a mistake. It was 2 or 3 years before I had a decent garden again. I assumed it was form the herbicides they use on the rice.

FWIW, on the organic gardening side (I'm "semi" myself as I will occassionally use limited chemicals, etc) lawn grass clippings from unknown sources -- i.e. picking them up from the town dump or having a landscaper drop them off has been known to have this same impact on gardens from residual chemicals that people applied to their lawns.

Picloram is most likely the problem. It's active in the soil and doesn't readily breakdown. Washingto State University(WSU) had a problem about 5 years ago with composting plant material that had Picloram in it. As I recall, they sold the compost and the Picloram was still active AFTER the composting and caused a lot of plant mortality for those folks who used it. There was a lot of lessons learned from that experiece. I doubt that 2,4-D was your problem however. The label allows use on pasture with grazing after 7 days. Unlike Picloram, it breaks down very quickly.

You've already solved your problem. Doesn't seem like you need any more input.

Thanks, what I was interested in is how long will it continue to be an issue. Is there any way to mitigate the damage. Should I try to flush the affected soil with extra water.. that is the type of input I was hoping for....

2-4-D is a contact killer it has no soil activity.
