Can I braze with MAPP or propane, and if so, which?

I've done brazing with plain MAPP gas in a propane torch setup. You can braze small pieces with no problem (1/4" thick or so).

You can't get enough heat to braze an engine block or something really large because it'll draw the heat out faster than the otrch can deliver it.

One trick that helps, get a helper with a second propane or MAPP gas torch to help heat the area. This sounds goofy but it really works for those of us without an OxyAcetylene rig.

MAPP is hotter. I use a MAPP torch to heat rusted nuts on implements to break them loose. I do not have a portable oxy/acetylene outfit.

thing about propane that means you cant weld with it is that even with oxygen it cannot burn hot enough to melt steel, the tempterature it reaches is lower than the melting point of steel. so it just can't work...

Yep as stated you can braze with wither one if you use Oxygen with it.

MAPP gas is just propane with a bit of acytelyne in it to make it a bit hotter.

I have a propane/oxy rig and it brazes fine.
Cuts too. You just cant weld with propane, something about the gas....

I assume you mean the MAPP and propane bottles- Propane no, but I got a MAPP outfit many years ago that had some brazing rod with it (low temp, I assume). Got it from Sears- don't know if its still available, or how well it works. Propane substituted for acetylene, when used with oxygen in a gas "welding" setup, works fine for brazing, but not for welding.

They are both hot enough if you add oxygen. The post didn't specify his setup.

You can braze with propane and ox. It really works rather good. But the reason you cant gas weld with propane is because when propane burns it gives off water. It just isnt hot enough to weld with.

All the fuel gases have hydrogen, so all produce some water vapor as a product of combustion. Acetylene is C2H2- thus it produces water vapor.
