My 9N has a red engine and drive train and I would
like some advice on color for repainting to original specs
Were any 9N's originally red and grey?
Was only one type of Red used on Fords from 1940 on?
The "Ford Red" appears more orange than the old (faded?) color.
Dod Ford change clor?

Besides adding red bellies in 1948, note also that "new" (8N) ford grey is lighter than "old" ford grey (9N and 2N).

Philip: It used to be fairly common for a dealership to repaint a tractor to the current color scheme when they did major work on it(engine or trans rebuild for example).
Also if they had a used tractor to sell it would bring a higher price if it looked good. The newer color paint was usually in stock at the dealership and frankly the newer colors usually look better.
This practice is still used for the same reasons today. What I'm getting at is it is very common to find the wrong paint scheme on an older tractor. In my opinion this doesn't necessarily make these newer colors incorrect when restoring a tractor as they are really a part of the history of each tractor.

I disagree about the colors used in restoration. If you are going to restore
a tractor, restore it. That means making it like it was when it left
the store. Anything else is a renovation. Henry Ford sold Model T's in black.
If you see a Model T painted red, you might wonder what else is messed up on it.
When I see a 9N or 2N painted like an 8N or a Dagenham Blue, the flags go up. If you don't care enough to paint it right,
what else have you cut corners on?
If you want to find out about your 9N, you need to mosey on over to the N-Board, where that's ALL we talk about.

The 1939 9N and 1942 2N were all gray. The 1948 8N was the first Ford to feature the red and gray scheme. Easiest thing to do is to let you see a restored 9N- jump on over to Tyler Neff's 9N Ford Ferguson Page @ http://members.aol.com/tylerneff/tyler.htm

Tyler knows the 9N. Might ask him what color he used.
