What does the DOT number on tires stand for? For instance my 25' GN trailer tires say DOT 25BL 0505

Would I assume that 0505 means they were made in May 2005? I'm guessing that DOT only allows tires to be used for a certain length of time?

A date code would be very helpful when buying tires, That way, you could tell if you're getting a fresh tire or one that has languished in the back of a warehouse for years.

Just what we need more government regulations. Most tires on anything that gets much use will wear the tires out before they rot out and the rest will usually rot out. We have got tires out of the depession era that are on things around here still holding air jus not used much and have newer tires on things with heavy seasonal use out of the 50's or 60's maybe newer. Just don't see many 7.50 20's or 6x32 around so must be at least 30 years old the wagons are over 20 that we've had them. Yes we blow one out once in awhile too. I also throw the caps on my semi and blow out virgin tires on the trailer about once every 3-5 years so why an age limit other than another way to make things expensive. Common sense goes along ways on tires. A little over inflation is better than under inflated. Not excessive either way though.

I just wonder why they are making the tires worse than they used to?

I was sure thinking FL DOT was limiting tires to 6 years. Maybe it is a state by state thing. Not sure if it is for steering, drive, and trailer or what. Sure would suck for trailer to be limited to 6 years. I wont ever wear a set out. They will date out before they get to roll over many times.

Blaine, Dennis is correct on the date a tire is made, or at least the date it is molded. The other numbers and letters tell things such as the plant it was produced in, the size and style of tire. The example you give would be a tire that was made in Feb of 2005. There is quite a stir in tire circles now about limiting the length of time a tire can be in service but right now there is no limit. The dates are are part of the serial number to be used for recalls.

Two years ago he wanted $2500 for the long nose 9500 GMC.Its sat for at least 20 years and has a busted frame rail. Its pretty rough but you dont find one every day.

The 318 Detroit was supposedly overhauled and made in to a 350 not long before it was parked. It would make a sweet tractor hauler.

Email me if you want contact info.

I bought a running 1966 CO-4000 IH with a 318 and a 10 speed for $1,000 and drove it home.It had new brakes and a new splitter plus a rebuilt alternator in the box.

I found this at>Link

tires>Link bear a "born on" date. Imprinted on one or both sidewalls is an alphanumeric code of a dozen or so letters and numbers that begins with "DOT." Tires produced starting in 2000 have a four-digit birth date code at the end of the DOT number. The first two numbers indicate the week, and the last two the year. So, for example, a DOT number ending in 0205 means the tire was produced the second week of January 2005.
