I am looking at a single axle mack dump truck with a low sided contractors dump box. If I buy this truck, I'd like to be able to pull my gooseneck,(30' with two tractors). IT has a 300 mack engine and a nine speed road ranger, and great brakes, should be awsome for pulling. Now for the question at hand. If the trailer sits ok at the dump box floor level, can I make a hidden gooseneck hitch below the floor? It would likely be behind the axle because of the box width. Would I have to pin the front of the box down so it doesn't bang from the trailer? Could I make a heavy pedistal right behind the tailgate and pull the trailer that way? It might look a bit dorky but it would be easy to fabricate. It would also be several feet behind the axle but it is a 39000 GVW truck. I live in Minnesota and contacted MNDOT to see what I can legally do. No one had an answer. If someone else has done this, I'd love to see pics. Thanks

Was going to say something hours ago but figured I would hold back and see what others said first. If you are going to mount the ball to the bed its self you will NEED to make a pin lock set up for the bed or you will have trouble. Don't ask how I know but lets just say it wasn't pretty. I tried a mount sort of like that and in a heavy pull the bed came up and caused lots of other problems

I would think you would want something to secure the box down when pulling. The other option is to convert the gooseneck to a pintle hitch. The trailer outfit I know has trailers which can either have a bolt on gooseneck or bolt on pintle hitch frame. Dump trucks use a pintle hitch for pulling equipment or pups. Dave

u should be able to just put it in the box. make sure your measurements are right and see where it will sit in the box if its no more than a foot or so behind axle should be fine. only one way to find out for sure though. hook it up dont be scared

I have worked on a couple of Class 8 Semi car haulers that had a 5th wheel mounted very low to the ground behind the rear dual axles. Kinda weird looking but the driver said it pulled good.

checking your DOT Regulations for Combinations and classes of Trucks and trailers might be worthwhile.

I don't think there would be a problem as long as you box in the rear of your frame like they do for pintle hook hitches.
