Well Old RED, I don't remember mentioning Landscapers.

But a few Landscapers we do have around here have Internationals

pulling there bigger loads. And they do use Dump trucks. There Mower crews drive the old junky wore out pickups and trailers with the mowers bouncing all over the trailers. (They used to come into the Kubota Dealer I worked for all the time)

I worked For a IHC truck dealer for many years. Worked on all Brands. I don't consider Macks, Peterbilts, Kenworths that Whopping of an upgrade! except the price.
They all have there place in the market and they all make a good model or two. Sterling is a good truck with some good quality components built into it.
I am not going to get into the CDL/DOT Bull as it has been well covered for days on this sight.
You are however right in that they won't likely give up there Fords, Dodges and Chevys for a real Road Tractor or Truck.

How much more fuel does the larger truck use? How much more is the registration? Insurance?
Landscapers aren't going to run around with their mowers on trailers behind trucks like that. It just wouldn't make sense for them. Someone who does that kind of work just doesn't need a truck that big. Instead of a couple hundred bucks a year if that on registration for their F250 they'll end up paying a couple thousand for a Sterling like that? The price difference isn't that big, but the difference in the cost of running it is HUGE. And if you're going to upgrade from a pickup to a truck like that why wouldn't you upgrade to a Mack or a Peterbilt or a Kenworth rather than a Sterling.
Isn't a vehicle like that a commercial vehicle aswell? That means you have to keep logbooks and keep track of your sleep and all the hoopla that comes with commercial vehicles. You're never going to see trucks like that replace pickup trucks.

beautiful trucks, actually the rollback rig in the lower pic should have one, im wondering if these are posed for sterling sales adds, and are still untitled, the tow rig doesnt have a company name on it either and it should if its a owned truck

now thats my kind of pickup truck,,, that would be awesome to have,and would do the job quite well, I agree too much BS about DOT,,,here lately,, I would love to have one of these babies to haul my gooseneck flatbed or dump trailer with,,, my 250 does a good job but man oh man,,,,, It would almost feel like driving a BIG truck again, I havent been able to do that since my accident 7 yrs ago,,,

I told my boy my next truck would be the 450 or better,,, because the 250's and 350's,, aint what they used to be,,, too many luxeries and soccer mom comforts in them,, cant even hardly find one with roll down windows,, but I dont suppose these have them either then huh,,,,,but then again who would care,, riding hig and pretty, thansk for the pics,,, ,,

Even a day cab Sterling has several engine options. Cat, 2 Cummins engines or Mercedes Benz
engine. An Auto or manual shift 7 or 9 Speed Eaton would be a good transmission to run in it.

I bet you could buy a low pro. Sterling or Freightliner with those engine options For less than a F450-F550. Then add the body you want or 5th wheel.

yeah that was my thougts, you can get a bigger better truck for LESS than a pick up,,I saw a large chevy truck [this size]with a dump body on it ,, and it was way!!!! under what a 450 would be,,

I would still have to keep my pickup thoug I guess for the snow plow,, I wouldnt want to put a huge plow on one of those beauties,, it would be hard to get in some of the driveways I do,, my place wouldnt matter much its got lots of area to put the snow,,,

heres my idea, sell my truck to my son in 2 years he will have his license 1 year by then,,, tell him I will need the truck when it snows,, then I HAVE to replace my 250????? hummmmmthis may work haha


I kinda wonder if the newer truckers ever even heard of a 5 & 4.. or any dual stick for that matter,,,, I aint that old [44] and thats what I learned on,, but the next generation seems to know less,,, hence the auto's in class 8 trucks??? I loved my jake and gears for going down the hills, brakes seemed to last forever,, now I smell brakes form drivers on straight aways?? 6 weeks in class and now I am a truck driver,,, sorry for the last rant,,

I think for a Class 5 or 6 Truck with an Eaton 7 Speed manual shift is a good match to the 225-325 hp engines.

The 7 Speed manual with the automatic shifter is a good choice for Class 5 or 6 tractor or truck that has to drive in urban areas.

I almost bought a used demo 24,000 miles Sterling Acterra low pro with a Mercedes MBE900 225 hp 7 speed manual. For $28,500 with a good box on it. It was a shorter wheel base 12 foot box. Endless possibilities. This was about 6 years ago. But I passed.

i havent had the oportunity to drive one of these new ones yet, but i do understand that in the last few years they have really gotten a nice product togeather, from the older days when they bought out ford heavy truck division thats to be expected as the old original sterling trucks were considered really nice and well built for their day and they are still highly sought out by old truck collectore, i think the last of the original sterlings were built in the very early '50's i hope i get to take one out for a spin one of these days, ive drove petes and kw's for the last 20 years but i learned old school in a mack with a 5 & 4- 2 stick tranny

The Sterling has a quiet cab and good options.
The Doors are a composite material that reduces a lot of road noise. Even Freightliner has Improved there Cab looks a whole bunch.

My Wifes Dad drove an old Sterling in the 1940'-1950's he said the cabs were partially made of wood and nailed together.

that would be correct, most all vehicle bodys were made that way back then, when there restored these days thats the hardest part, making the wood parts especially the parts inside the sheetmetal body panels, it takes a cabinetmaker to do it, and with todays massproduced stuff old school craftsmen are hard to find and expencive when you do, for their day those old sterlings were top of the line,
