I attended the Ft Scott,KS Steam Show and Tractor Pull today and heres what I saw. There was probably 75 plus pickups and trailers there plus a few semis representing at least 4 states. Not one single DOT number was seen.In visiting with some people almost none were aware of the DOT # requirement.I cant even put the replies on here that some made when informed of this.

The worst thing I saw was an older Ford F-250 with single rear wheels pulling a 26 ft tandem axle dual wheel trailer. On it were 3 pulling tractors,an M Farmall,H Farmall, and a C Farmall.Way too much weight was on the poor pickup. He did have the safety chains hooked up.Lots didnt.

So what did you think of the show other than the dot issues. Last year it was a bust, better this year? And when did the three farmall's pull? Must have been sunday. Saturaday there could not have been over 10 tractors that pulled. I remember before the I got the biggest dick contest when ft scott show had 100 tractors pulling. Now just a few way hopped up ones on aviation fuel, with less the 100 people watching. Thats a shame in my book. Need tolearn about DOT law becuase I am lost on this conversation, agree dot are ball busters, but admit I don't know the law. My worries are always saftey in nature, people with half tied on overloaded stuff make me worried, I haul my three kids on the same road. The best I saw at ft scott was a 16 foot utility with a suzuki sameri pulling it with three motorcycle powered lawn mower tied on and a wonan driver to boot, now that scary. Missouri inspects the auto's but not the trailer, go figure, got three trailer and have never had a one inspected. DD

I thought that the show was pretty good this year.I didnt stay for Sat eves pull but was there Sunday for the classics. They pulled for 3 hours.I was chairman of the first ever antique pull at Ft Scott back in 1976.I did alot of antique pulling from 1976-86 when it was cheaper to do.

And it is the guy with the F250 pulling 3 tractors that has this whole mess stired up. If you guys would stay legal there would be no reason to include you into DOT rules.

Of the 75 plus haulers that I saw yesterday he was the only one that I would say was overweight. Most were way under.Just putting a DOT # on isnt going to stop anyone from overloading. You will have to use portables to catch them.

Lots of grain semis with DOT #'s overload. Some years back a semi loaded wheat out of one of my grain bins at the farm.He told me to pile it high. When I got the weight ticket he was 114,000 lbs.He had nearly 1500 bushels on.

"You will have to use portables to catch them."

My point exactly. But with out a DOT # on the door he will never be weighed the way the laws are set up.

I would love to see just once a 5th wheel RV going threw a brake inspection on the side of the road. Just because he is hauling a tractor behind a F250 or driving a RV does not exempt him from safety laws.

In MO all of our vehicles all have to be inspected every other year. Why dont the states require all trailers to be safety inspected every other year too and keep DOT out of it.To be inspected you would have to bring the truck you pull it with.

My trucker buddies all tell me that several DOT officers have bragged to them that there isnt a vehicle that they cant flunk on any given day.

Why cant DOT weigh everyone whether they have a DOT # or not?I wouldnt have a problem with that.I usually weigh 20-22,000 lbs on a 26,000 lb liscense with an adequate truck and trailer to handle it.The DOT was at my local grain elevator a couple of years ago checking all trucks the day after I got done with bean harvest. They didnt care if you had a DOT # or not.

most grain haulers and cattle haulers are overweight.even 1000 lbs...you are still overwt.
If you have a tandom dual flatbed with nothing on it, you can be illegal.with the capabilities to haul more than 26001 lbs, you have to have all the cdl bull crap and dot #

Only IF you are commercial. Private with farm plates, no CDL, even for an 18-wheeler. Course, if you cross a state line...

We need a lobby group as strong as the RV'ers have!! In spite of what DOT thinks if you are not hauling for a living it is pleasure and we should be treated just like an RV! I do agree we shouldn't be going over on axle weight and certianly should be following the rules on tie downs. Why does my grocery getter need an ugly a$$ DOT # on the side just because I go to a couple of tractor shows a year?!? Have you ever filled out a DOT# form? Not a single place on there to mark that you are a private citizen, not engaged in commerce in any way, and just need one because your pickup weighs more than 8K. It is set up totally for companies engaged in business. Do you have a drug testing program for yourself and the records to prove you test yourself to make sure you are fit? What a crock!! My DOT# BR549 :)

Only one way to go in the mean time as you form a lobby to get the law changed. That is to get in compliance yourself or team up with one or more to get one rig legal for all go to the pulls.
No sense not pulling or paying fines. Where there is a will there is a way.

The DOT law is very simple. It says that the officer can decide at any time what he thinks the law is and enforce it however he thinks it is at any given time.

Being in the construction business, I frequently get pulled over while hauling the bobcat. They always seem to come up with new regulations or a different interpretations of other ones.

Meanwhile, I watch the Average Joe pulling a trailer down the road that is severely overlaoded and unsafe. Yet they are immune from DOT regulations because they are not in the business.

All I can tell you about the average Joe is that if he causes an accident, sue the living heck out of him. You will win a mint in todays legal system and you will own his toys as well. Being non compliant and ignorant to the law doesn't make one exempt in civil court.
