I'm about to park my 2008 Powerstroke 4 dr 4 wd!!Can someone tell me what older (1996-2001 or about)single cab 2 wheel drive truck GAS or DIESEL, STICK or AUTO will give me the best fuel mileage pulling my 32 foot gooseneck, any make or model truck?? I drive very responsibly and at the speed limit to conserve fuel, currently getting 13 mpg in my 2008 Powerstroke while loaded and 14.5 empty. Thanks for help on this one.

install a vacuum gauge where it can be seen easily. try to keep the vacuum needle as high as possible when accelerating. if you can do that, your mileage will go up because it will change your driving habits. fast starts and sudden accelerating will make the gauge go down and that is an indicator of more power to the engine and thus lower mileage. normal engine vacuum at idle is about 19 on the gauge so try to keep it at that at all times.

Vacume gauge? on a twin turbo diesel truck? geeze I need to go pull the boost gauges off all my diesels and put on vac gauges, somebody alert the diesel engine manufactures! thats what were all doing wrong! Sorry, im with the others, pay cash for a truck and brag about your wealth and then complain about the price of fuel! That like knowingly buying a dually pickup then bit@hing about buyin two more tires! Go buy a friggin honda and put your trailer away! sounds like your rich enough to buy 10 of whatever your hauling and parking one in all your favorite spots!

I've never seen a post that was filled with so many "credible" contradictions ! My head is spinning !! Each new comment is filled with data that mostly contradicts the last post... WTF ?

Not that I really give a care about diesels... I drive a Ford with a 460 15 freeway, 11 city.. low sulfer nothing.

But I HAVE heard the newer diesel trucks get WAY less mileage than the older mechanical injection trucks. thus my reason for reading, commenting on this most interesting and confounding post.

I hope this helps, I have a 2001 Dodge 3500 CTD, 6 speed and 3.55 rear end ratio and before using a hypertech power programmer, I was getting around 16 empty and about 14 loaded pulling a heavy 18 ft implement trailer loaded with truck and trailer weighting about 17 to 18,000 lbs. After a programmer and good free flowing turbo back exhaust system (including muffler) I could pull about 21 to 24 mpg empty and 18 to 20 mpg loaded pulling the trailer with about a combined weight of around 14,000 lbs. Now add ULSD with no changes I lost about 3 to 4 mpg across the board. Talked with my co workers at Robert Bosch Automotive (The same Diesel Pump people) and they are seeing wear on injectors and pumps like never before. They suggested using Power Serve fuel additive in the fuel for two reasons- #1 added lubrication to prevent wear, and # 2 is to add back about 3 point of centane rating thats now missing. This brings up the centane rating back to wear it was before ULSD. After the mixing about 32 oz of power serve to each 100 gallons of the junk fuel, my mileage is back up to around 20 to 21 empty and 17 to 18 loaded. Now for even a bigger issue is our farm equipment, the fuel is now also ULSD with red dye and gallons per hour has climbed also and the power has decreased as well. Were no adding power serve to the bulk talks as well. Nothing like adding more cost to 4.00 farm fuel. Thanks and sorry for the rant. -Ken

We use a 1982 Dodge Power Ram 4WD, 318 V8 Gasoline Pickup and it gets about 10 MPG pulling a empty 3 axle trailer.

Fuel price and MPG is why I am thinking about putting my 87 Chevy K2500 4x4 6.2 diesel back in use. Short on power pulling a load, but 11 to 12 loaded not too bad. My 01 Chevy 2500 4x4 6.0 gas won't do over 8 loaded, even after Superchips tuner. Was down around 6 before, so some improvement. DOUG

unfortunatly i think as far as mpg your about as high as you can go you didnt say how much weight your pulling, but it takes power to do work, to make power you burn fuel, if you look at changing things your no better, pulling a smaller trailer may bring up mpg, but if it takes 2 trips to do the job, you cost yourself more in the long run, if you step up to a class 6,7 or 8 rig to move more in less trips, then the the mpg goes even more down but more work is done per gallon of fuel, but the cost of owning and mantaining and insuring this size rig is way more than your paying now and lets not forget the cld to drive it, im afraid your getting the best deal right now

I can only dream of getting that kind of milage with my 08 duramax.I pull a 34ft flatbed & get 8 to 9 loaded.I only get 14-15 empty driving 55-60 mph letting it coast & speeding up slowly. Its a 4dr dually. It will pull better than my 01 f350,but is down 2-4 mpg from the Ford.Chevy dealer has had it in 3 different times for this & says there isn,t anything they can do.I have around 14500 mi on it with 4500-5500 towing mi so it should be broke in.I leave it parked as much as I can,but spring work & haying season is almost here.

You buy a $40,000 dollar truck that weighs 8000lbs and now you are complaining about the bad mileage it gets? Did you not see the window sticker that said it would get 11mpg? Maybe a better idea would have been to buy a $2500 dollar 4x4 truck and used the remaining $37,500 dollars for gas. This is a very illogical post and I am wondering if it's real. Gas or diesel really doesn't seem that expensive if you don't have a $700 dollar a month truck payment for 5 years with $150 a month for insurance. I think testosterone sells more vehicles than anything. Thats why you don't see too many women down to a dealership buying 11 mpg trucks. They usually get a 24 mpg little suv or 30 mpg car.

DAVPAL, thats quite the ridiculous reply there. It is a serious post, I'm REALLY looking for better fuel mileage. By the way, the truck didn't cost in the upper 40's, more like upper 50's. No $700 month payment here! I normally pay cash for my toys, including my Grumman Tiger, in which I pay $4.90 per gallon at the local airport, and I'm always looking for ways to lean her out. Maybe you should go back to your hobby farming and let the folks that are serious about helping others answer with valid replys.

I want to thank everyone else for their valid response and help with my question!

Now I am even more impressed. A guy that pays cash for a $50,000 dollar truck and can't afford the fuel for it. Big time spender. You should be a poster child for the USA. Also, there is no valid answer to your questions about your fuel mileage. That is what I was talking about. A truck that stickers at less than 11 mpg usually gets 11 mpg or less. No mystery there. I will go back to the hobby farm now. Good luck with the truck.

My 2008 has 9800 miles on it, and I get 18-19 empty, 11-12 pulling 20,000 lbs. It"s a 4x4 dually 4 door with 4.10 gears. That"s better than my 2000 got. I would be surprised if any brand pickup got better than 13 mpg pulling a loaded 32 foot trailer. Now if the programmer companies get their "off road" tune perfected, the DPF and cat converter are coming off my truck, and milage will improve.

Once those 6.4's get about 30-40k miles on them the milage really improves.
They were build to run on low sulfer, you can't run anything else in them without damaging the emissions equipment.

I personally don't think you are going to do much better than that pulling that size of a trailer. I've got a 5.9 cummins in a dodge, and a 5.9 Cummins in a Ford F Series, pull a 24ft and get around 10 to 14 mpg. Have got 2 friends that have Duramaxes and they get 10-12 .Another friend has a F 350 with V- 10 gas, gets 8 and dont have the torque of the diesels. The low sulphur fuels don't seem to get as good of milage either. My 2 cents. Welding man

The low sulfer has nothing to do with it. The latest batch of diesels gets a bit worse mileage due to the emissions reduction equipment, but its not a big change.

The basics are, inflate your tires to the max, drive slower, plan your braking, put some aero devices on your trailer if its a boxy one, don't be pulling weight you don't need too ie piles of junk in the bed.

I will have to beg to differ with you. Since the advent of the ultra low sulfer diesel fuel the mileage in my trucks has dropped 2-4 mpg. 3 Dodge cummins all averaged 19-20 empty, now 16-17 empty, wife's Suburban always averaged 19,now the best it will do is 15.5,This isn't a 1 or 2 fillup change, these figures are running average over 4-5000 miles on each vehicle.

For what its worth-- My old Dodge with 5.9 cummins will go from 11 mpg to 17 by pumping up the Toyos to 80 lbs all around at 2700 ft elev.in 70 plus wx . I need a chiropractor to help me out of the truck tho after a couple hundred miles.

Interesting. I track mpg with every fill up.

Here is a graph of my mpg since new. I have excel calculate total miles driven divided by total gallons and put a dot on the graph at each fill up.

Can you tell where USLD was phased in? I can't from looking. But you can see the difference for winter fuel and cold Wisconsin temperatures.

third party image

Obviously, this is only for my truck, but there is no evidence of a "2-4 mpg drop" due to ULSD fuel. By the way, I tow 10,000# about 3-4000 miles a year.

I agree with you.Low sulfer diesel is junk as the cetane rating is down..I'm off 2 mpg and have less power.
