Not sure if this is the right place for this question, but I have noticed my 2003 Duramax smoking a little when it idles for an extended period of time. I have only noticed this since it has gotten cold, but I can't remember it ever doing it before. It looks to be a blue smoke. Could this be the newer fuels or some other problem? Seems to clear up when driving. Is this common. The truck has 75,000 miles on it. Thanks-Bob

Just got off the phone with my Chevy dealer. They say that the warranty has been extended to 7yr/200k on the injectors. They have 2 rigs in right now, so it will be after the 1st of the year. They will check it out and then determine. Thanks a lot for everyone's input. Bob

a guy i work with has a 03 duramax with 145000 miles it started smoking at a idle . when he checked into it GM told him 03 thru 05 has a warrenty on all the injectors at no cost to you but it has to be taken to the dealer where you bought it. it is in the shop right now they are replacing all the injectors and part of the injection pump at no charge to him he says the warranty is only good as long as the truck doesnt have over 200000 miles on it. if you need more help e-mail me and ill get you a number to call someone at GM

I dis-agree with Rusty on this one. It's 90% certain to be the injectors going bad. Have the dealer do a check on the injector balance rates. Leaking injectors will show up first at idle. May also be bleeding into the crankcase. Check your oil for over full and or diesel smell.

There is a known issue with them where they fail. GM has extended the warranty on them from 5/100 to 7yr/200k miles.

If the dealer gives you bunk or a blank stare, go to a dealer that sells and services a lot of diesels. Smaller dealerships may not see many diesels and may have limited experience.

It should be either $100 or free to fix. Cost if it was out of warranty $3000-ish at the dealer. Re-man injectors are about $275-300 each and labor is for 8 hours.

It's called "wet-stacking". There is more fuel going into the engine than what it can efficiently burn, and the un-burned fuel exits the tailpipe in the form of blue smoke. This condition is much more prevalant during cold weather idling because the engine just cannot stay warm enough to completely ignite all of the fuel. Modern, computer controlled diesels should not be as prone to doing this as the older diesels are, so you might want to have it checked out at a shop.
