Something broke loose on the inside of the tailgate latch on my truck over the weekend. When I try to open it, it releases like half-way---sort of like if your car door isn"t quite shut.
I was wondering if there"s an easy trick to fixing it, (or where to start, I guess).
Thanks in advance!

Appears to be a bunch of them lately.
Fixed my 2000 a few weeks ago.
Went to the auto supply house and found the fasteners. Guess I'm too cheep to pay almost four bucks for a package of fasteners to get just one.
Used a 3/16" plastic anchor and secured it with a piece of wire. the plastic cover is a trick to get off. The manual says to pry it up from the bottom. That broke the fastening tabs. Had to secure the cover with a self drilling screw.

Mine has a spring each side where the latch protrudes from the gate. Is a spring broken??

If it is like my '99 Chevy, there are two rods that go from the center latch to the sides. They have a plastic clip that keeps the rods from separating from the handle, and the plastic clips break after time. You can carefully pry off the moulding around the handle and see the rod ends. I bought a package of the plastic clips at the local auto parts store, it had an assortment of different kinds in it, including the one I needed. Turned out to be a quick fix.

My Dodge recently bent some parts when I tried to open the tailgate with pressure against it. Just sheet metal parts bent. Easy to work on. Do you have a plate on the opposite side of tailgate unlocking handle? If so, remove it and check inside for how it works.

Also, if you cannot get tailgate to open, mine had a lever out at the latch that moved with a screw driver and unlocked the tailgate. Then removed latches at end of tailgate and fixed bent part.

Hope this helps, but mine was pretty simple parts.

Also, a good idea is to spray lots of oil back into the inside of the tail gate. Especially into and around the handle, and the latches. Fords used to be good at getting all dry and rusty, making the latch rods and handles bend, an making the latches stick-resulting in much exploration of the Devil's language! It makes a mess, but, i haven't had to replace my Ranger tail-gate latches in 6 years! And, i bought it used!
