I recently purchased a used Onan 15KW PTO driven standby generator. On the controls there is a spring wound 0-5 minute timer labeled "Field Boost Timer". Does anyone know how this timer is used? Also, the model is 15UF-3N104/1A. If anyone has an operator's manula for this model, I would pay someone for a photocopy of the manual. Thanks very much. Paul

It's supposed to up the field excitation and output voltage to 10% over rated. E.g 132V instead of 120V. The timer is to limit the time the electrical equipment sees the safe max voltage of 10% over nameplate rated value. The idea is to start motor loads a little larger and farther away from the generator than a 15KW usually can. Other tricks of the trade are battery boost field excitation used in some small invertor generator. The CT transformer trick with its output in series with the generator field winding works well. Even if the generator terminal drops which would usually lower the field excitiation. The high current through the CT secondary and into the excitation field will keep the generator's excitation flux at max.
