1Jake2: John PA has the best way, but if you're in a pinch, the usual method is to lay the blade flat on a piece of fine sandpaper on a FLAT surface (a table saw table is what we always used at home) and move it in a figure-8 pattern.

I sharpen both the blade and one side of the plate on a flat piece of sandpaper. On an old commercial unit you may have to build up the end of the auger (the side that goes into the motor) to assure good contact with the balde and plate.

Without having special equipment, you might consider taking the blades to your favorite grocery store and asking them to include your blade with their normal (pick-up and delivery) sharpening service that they use.

Most family-owned stores work out just fine.
Stay away from the big-boy stores, though.

The meat stores usually contract with someone.

There are all kinds of them on eBay right now. I was looking for an add-on to the pto of my wife's new Kitchenaid 575 watt mixer.

Lots of places have the smaller electric meat grinders. Northern Tool, Acadamy Sports, as well as most appliance stores.

I see used grinders all the time that were traden-in at the HOBART(tm) shops.

They, Hobart(tm) make most of the equipment that you will see at the pro's.

Try HOBART in the larger city phone-book.
