I have to vent---so bear with me.
Last weekend, I rented a drain cleaning tool from the local Depot. It was one of those small units, with a drill motor at one end, attached to a drum with the cable inside. The end of the cable is shaped like a corkscrew.
Anyway, I told this kid what the situation was, the size pipe (1 1/2"), etc. I asked how this tool was supposed to work--he said, it"s supposed to grab the bloackage, and push it out of the way. When he said that, warning lights flashed mentally, because I was pretty sure the corkscrew arrangement wan"t going to "push" anything.
Anyway, I used the tool, and sure enough, that sucker grabbed hold of the bloackage, and hung up---wouldn"t turn in one direction, spooled off more cable in the other, so I pulled it out of the pipe with a pair of vise grips stuck in the end of a piece of 2" pipe.
Obviously, the cable got bent up pretty bad but I did get it out, along with a wad of grass.
When I got the tool back to the store, the kid didn"t want to do anything without a supervisor. I said, I paid for the damage protection insurance, but that wans"t good enough. He"d get a manager to call me Monday. The manager never did, but the kid called back and said basically, I was at fault and that I"d have to pay for the repair ($27 for a new cable). I got mad, and told him no, but not exactly in those words.
Now, here"s the rub---they"ve run another debit against my account in the amount of the rental, plus repair without my authorization!
I"ve contacted my bank to dispute the charge, and they"ve shut down my debit card to prevent further charges, but I"m mad as HE!! at Home Depot, the manager who won"t return my call, the tool that wouldn"t work, you name it.
Okay, now tell me what you guys think....

I worked at a rental store for some time, and we always warned people who rent those drain cleaners big or small that if they over torque the cable it wrap onto itself inside the pipe and it will be hell to pull it out(if it comes out or else they will need to call a profesional to remove the pipe!!! we told them this straight off each time) and they will be charged for a new cable(we did not offer insurance)

If they did not tell you this, I would hold them to it then, they should warn you and show you how to use the tool. And never get those "extra" insurance things, they make money and there's too much fine print to get anythig good out of it.

Like someone said, I would have bought one as well.... but thats me.

Here's my advice, for what it's worth...

First, the kid is in a no win position, leave him alone! Second, forget the phone and e-mail and go to the store in person, kinda like dads used to teach their sons, if you have a problem deal with it face to face. When you go to the store, be polite!! Ask to speak with the department manager and tell your side of the story, calmly. If you fail to achieve satisfaction, step it up and talk to the assistant manager, then the store manager and finally the district manager. This is a $27 fix for crying out loud!!! Someone at the store will correct it...

Whatever the outcome, be polite. Is it really worth telling someone off over $27?

You"re right---$27 isn"t going to make or break me, BUT (and this IS the bigger issue now), the fact that someone is going back and changing the amount debited against my checking account, after the initial transaction was made, is a MAJOR issue (with me, anyway).
Think about it, you don"t know if it"s a one time deal (for the rental), or someone"s going shopping.....

Hi Dug,

"Is it really worth telling someone off over $27?"

Tool Talk Forum might be one of the few communities in the country today where a sizable percentage of the members would not be willing to PAY $27 for the chance to tell someone off. Civility has been just about stamped out.

All the best, Stan

Just an update on what"s happened so far. I sent an email to their corporate office, and got a reply and claim number, and supposedly, their something or other team is investigating the matter.
They also apologized (yeah, right) for my bad experience, and how they"re "always striving to make the shopping experience the best ever, and yaddah,yaddah,yaddah".....
Anyway, even if nothing happens, they will have earned the money they stole....
I"m thinking I might even get a return call from the store manager before it"s all over---who knows?

i personally hate home depots. The products they sell are not up to par even if it has a brand name, custom made crap ,special for HD. I would get my money back one way or another. I just dont understand why people shop there. Price over quality, I answered my own question. :-{

Better not get too loud at Home Depot, they might send Tony Stewart over to your house, LOL... Since he did not make the final 10 Chase cut, he might be real violent... even worse than the times he hit the reporters...

I don't know what the deal with HD is - 10 years ago they were top of the line - now the stores are so dirty and 1/2 a$$ed that I avoid all Home Depots!

Use lowes if in your area. I have found that you are greeted in most areas of the entire store with someone wanting to help you. Not the case in HD, Never, never can anyone be found to help. HD stores are really dirty. Can write your name on the white goods stock. Here is what many do-go to menards and get the price and stock numbers and to HD and they will match the price plus 10% of that off. Best used on rather large orders. My clerks adult son worked at HD until he got a better job and was treated very unkind to say the least. I have went to ebay to buy saw blades half the price of HD. When Walmart sets up hard ware stores HD will lose my trade. Slip the CEO and email with store number and time, date, and name of mgr. As in the Army sxxt rolls down hill and the mgr in on down hill side.

As others have said, never use a debit card for security deposits. Basically you wrote them a blank check.

You might consider going back to the rental department about eight o'clock Saturday morning when it's full of customers and raising hell about the so-called insurance and see if they change their tune.

go to the manager if he want listen go to distric manager and keep going until you get results like every one else says stay calm but in the end if you do have to pay tell them you want the old cable you can still use it with out the cork screw buy cutting it short and putting it in a cordless drill but be careful as it will twist up around your hand wear gloves

I am a retired bank examiner and I refuse to use a debit card in any transaction except at the ATM. There is almost no legal protection, it just opens up your wallet for the merchant to take all he wants. Always use a credit card, it offers legal protection and a good dispute system to use before you have to pay.

Jerry,

Visa has changed their policy on debit cards to the same as their credit cards. Now the consumer has no additional liability using a debit card rather than a credit card.

I'd crack out that damage protection insurance form that you opted for. They might have some fine print in there. I would go there, demand to speak to the manager. Don't leave until you do. But, stay calm. Explain the situation. Don't give them a reason not to listen to you. I would say that the staying calm part is gonna be the hardest thing for you to do.
