Scrap Price For Beryllium Copper

Anyone here know what the going scrap metal price might be for Beryllium copper. Through my research I have found it is some sort of hardened alloy copper. I have a couple of 55 gallon barrels of tiny rollers made of the stuff that I wanted to sell. The local fellow that picks up scrap metal just wanted to give me scrap steel price for them, I thought they might be worth more.

I know that Berylium copper has some crazy charecteristics about it when you drill it. If you don"t use coolant, a sharp drill will drill about twice it"s diameter into it and lock up like someone clamped a pair of vice grips on it. Apparently it contracts instead of expanding when it gets hot. We used it in a plastic injection molding shop I worked at when I was a young man. Fred OH

Copper is high right now and you should be able to get $3.00 $3.50 per pound pure copper. What you have is probably 25 Alloy (C17200) Beryllium Copper which contains about 1.80 % Beryllium. This probably worth about $4.50 per pound (must clean and free from other metals) if you can locate someone who knows how to handle safely and where to sell it so it gets recycled properly to reclaim the Beryllium. I know of one place in the country that does this which is where I work. Our competitor is located in Tenn. but I do not think that they actual melt and process Beryllium Copper there. If handled properly Beryllium Copper is handled properly it is safe. There is some in almost ever automobile, computer, and airplane. Do not grind, sand or machine dry (with cutting fluid/coolant).

The BeCu we have at the shop looks close enough to pass as plain copper. :^X As long as it looks & smells like copper, & passes the magnet test, they should buy it as regular # 1 or # 2 copper...

Last time I took aluminum cans in I saw a sign
said #1 copper: $3/lb, #2 copper: $2.50/lb.

What does that mean, #1 and #2 copper.

That stuff is a high-wear copper based alloy and it is pretty expensive. I would call around to other scrap dealers and see if you can get a feel for what the AMM (american metal market) price would be. That would give you a feel for how far off you are with the steel price offer.

One of the more interesting uses for this alloy is in the gun on the F-18. The gatling gun barrell runs on beryllium copper bearings for support. I know this because I worked on a McDonnell Douglass project to convert the guide tube and the blast diffuser from stainless steel to titanium alloy for the next-generation F-18 E/F Super Hornet.

It"s also used in pistons that pump liquid aluminum into the die-cast machines. High wear resistance and good high-temperature performance.

There's a barrel in the machine shop where I work that we put all the scrap copper as well as copper shavings into. I think they told me that they get about 4.00 a pound for scrap, but pay nearly 11.00 a pound for copper bars and rods. Dunno, must be why the dope heads are stealing copper wire out of new homes while they're being built. Jim.

A month ago copper here was bringing $3/pound.

Some of those same "dope heads" broke into a power
substation and stole all the copper grounding wires.
Then later when the grounding wire was needed it
wasn't there and the whole county spent a few hours without power.
They got about 100 pounds of copper wire.
The morons could have been electrocuted for $300.

A friend of mine told me that scrap copper (the regular type, not berrylium was selling for $1/lb) That was 6 months ago.

Beryllium copper is toxic. (if you sand it or grind it).
I once worked in a machine shop that made tools out of the stuff.
Pliers, sockets, wrenchs, etc.
These tools are used in mining operations because it
won't spark when it gets banged against something.
Makes for less explosion hazards when underground.
The stuff can be made very hard.
That probably explains why only the scrap steel price.
Hope you get a better price for the stuff.
I know it is expensive to buy.
