Does anyone know how to make a fish shocker that will work in ponds? I want to check the quality and somewhat quantity of fish in my pond. I have seen people use the old crank telephones before, but do not know if it will work in a pond. Any ideas?

There was an article in an Allen Echert book...I believe called the Frontiersman...and he described the Indians mixing up something, throwing it in the water in back bays off of the river and using horses to pull out the catfish...they were so big! I think the white man is still searching for this wonderful stuff. Fred OH

In some states it may be legal to electroshock in a private pond without permit. Here in Mass, you can do it anywhere you want - with a $100 scientific collectors permit specific to each "project",
and proof that you have been trained how to do it and not kill all the fish.

Do a google search for fish shocker. You will get lots of hits for sites that offer plans. You will also get some hits about people who got arrested for using them.

Back in the days when they printed arrests in the paper, I once saw the name & address of a guy I went to school with... The charge was Telephoning Fish... Sounded kinda funny, as if he were placing a call to Charlie the Tuna... LOL

about 50 years ago my neighbor used a old crank telephone magneto, as I remember you ran one wire to a three foot bright chain that would drag on the bottom of the river, that being the Ohio about 20 downstream from Evansville, Indiana. The other electrode from the magneto was attached to about 8 foot of bare wire and thrown over the side of a wooden boat. The boat was allowed to float downstream with the five horsepower motor idleing, one man running the motor and the other cranking the magneto, with a dipnet vere close by, When the smoth fish, would not work on scale fish, came on top of the river, they would move very fast on the surface, sometimes they would even go several feet on to a sandbar. I have seen 100 pounds of catfish being caught like this in ten minutes, end of fish story..

According to my Dad, you replace the piece of barbed wire with screen wire for scaly fish.

I have used back pack electroshockers on occassion in wadeable streams. These would not be sufficient to use in a pond - need bigger generator with more juice. The only people I know of that have those are state fish and game, or large consulting firms that do alot of that work.
Also note that if you want to do counts, shocking fish really only works in the shallow near shore because you have to net them as they are stunned.

I think you would need the help of an electrical enginer to put one together yourself.

I recommend using a long seine net, a case of beer and a couple of buddies.

for just the fish Re: fish shocker in reply to van robinson, 03-14-2006 02:47:29
put a gunny sack full of walnuts that still has the hulls on them or just the hulls. These will also bring the worms to the top of the ground if put on grass and wet down. ;))
