The impact I have is worthless - absolutely no power. Does anyone have a favorite. I don't want to spend thousands but I'm also not afraid to pay enough to get a good one.

Ingersoll-rand all of the way! I worked at the Athens Pennsylvania plant that makes the 231 and better impact tools. Great people, making great tools right here in the USA.

The 231 will do 95% of my work. I have a 2131 that does the 5% that the 231 will not handle.

Be sure that you have 90 psig at the tool when it is running at free speed. To do this add a T fitting and a pressure gage at the tool inlet. I usually just set my pressure regulator on the compressor at 115-120 psig for most operations.

Speaking of Ingersoll, I just bought an Ingersoll 3/8, supposedly the newest model with around 15000 BPM and it is FAST, maybe too fast for most purposes. When it backs out a bolt, the lock washer goes flying across the shop. It was spendy, but I just love it. Jim

IR titanium. Its amazing. This was a lesson in cheep tools. I bought a cheep one first, it was nearly useless. The IR is 10 times the tool! I paid $200. I am not a tool snob. I am mostly a craftsman man. But while it makes me sick thinking of how much it cost, if you want an usefull impact than buy this one. Its the most powerfull 1/2 impact made.

First be certain that you have oiled properly. Mine has an allen screw I must remove to oil it. It works fine with the oil, but is useless without. A few drops in the air hose won't do.

Snap-On. I bought an IM510( I think that is the number) used 15 years ago. I don't use it that nuch but when I need power this will do it. The first time I used it I snapped the studs off of my car. I use a cheap no name one to put tires on my car but when I need power I use the Snap-on. We even used it to tighten my spoke wheels on my Chevy C-70 ( which should of been a 3/4" job).

Ingersoll Rand is without equal period. I use and abuse their 2135 1/2 inch gun daily along with their 3/8 impact and air ratchets. It offers excellent balance, is lightweight, and has never let me down in the last 3 years of using it. To get the most out of it you need to use high flow connectors on your air hose. Also be sure to shop around, the same model can be found from under $200 to over $350 depending on where you shop. You may not need the power of the 2135, if so the 2131 is also a great gun and a little cheaper. Once you get one, take care of it, a little oil at the beginning of shift, and again at the end of the day when putting it away will do alot to ensure you get a great return on the investment you made in purchasing the gun.

I don't know who made Snap-on some 40 yrs ago but I still have the one I bought as an auto mechanic. Used it 7/8 yrs that way then quit the business.Didn't use it much again til this year when I started toying with the tractors and got a compressor. Works just as good now as it did 30 years ago when I stopped using it regularly. Don't remember what I paid for it and what ever it was, it would be a lot more now anyway.

Ingersoll-Rand

Model 231
Model 2131-(they also make a "Craftsman" brand named 2131 for Sears.)

I-R "Thunder Gun"

Not familiar with CP's but know that some are good.

Overall, you can't go wrong with an I-R gun. They've been in business the longest and have the best parts and service suppot.

Watch out for some of your "throw aways" that are on the market.

Harbor Frieght sometimes carries IR air impacts- their "thunder gun" model is rated somewhere around 300-350 ft/lbs and is under $250.

Also as has been said your air supply has a lot to do with it, bigger line works better.

As Fixerupper said, make sure you have the proper air supply, 90 psi **at the impact** and the flow also. If your air hose run is long, it needs to be a big hose. 5/16 or 3/8 hose. 1/4 is easy to handle but can be restrictive.

Hold the gun up. Run it wide open and adjust the knob that sets the power/speed to the fastest it will run. Stop, wait, after a bit, pull the trigger full on and hold it. Does it jump up to speed and seem to slow down slightly after that? Thats a sure sign of restriction.

Ingersoll Rand is probably the best. The new titanium line of impacts are pricey but the most power for the size and weight. The old standby is the IR 244A or the slightly lesser 231C. I have a 231C at work and am quite impressed with it. Ocassionally I have to double the air hose (two hoses into a "T" fitting at the gun) to get the full air flow needed, but that is an air hose problem, not the impacts.

I have found that even 3/8th air line is not big enough to get the full punch out of an impact wrench.

Get yourself a 25 or 50 foot length of 1/2 inch rubber air line. Hook it directly to the compressor or to the hard plumbing in the shop. Use 3/8 diameter quick connects. You can get these with 3/8 NPT fittings that will work with the 1/2 inch hose.

You can hear the difference in performance with the first pull of the trigger.

Leave the 1/4 inch line and fittings to the carpenters and their air nailers.

Are you running enough air to it? Quarter inch line will run a gun but 3/8 is better. Pressure doesn't seem to be as important as volume. Ingersoll Rand has good ones if you are willing to pay a little more. The new plastic ones are light weight, are fast and have a lot of power, and seem to hold up pretty well. CP is an old standby that has been around since the beginning of time but it seems the quality has suffered in the past few years. Seems like I keep grabbing the old CP 734 for most of the jobs in the shop. It doesn't have as much power and speed as some of the ingersoll's but it has a handy, sleek design and will handle up to 3/4" and 5/8" bolts if they aren't too tight. Jim
