I have an older Craftsman 10" table saw, motor stopped while I was ripping some old boards. Reset button didn't work, now I'm looking for a fuse. Do these saws have a fuse somewhere? For the life of me I can't find it, and I've searched at every point between the plug and the motor. Any thoughts?

Okay, started working backwards from the plug to isolate problem. When I got to the reset switch, thought I'd try one of the suggestions, so I whacked it good with the stick I use for feeding stock into the blade. Worked. I'm alternately relieved/
embarrassed. Next time I'll be sure to beat the switch all to hell before I call it quits and post again. Thank you all for your supremely helpful tips.

I had the same thing happen with my 10 radial arm saw. The reset button is actually a thermal overload switch that is mounted inside of the case. If you push the saw too hard, it draws too much current for too long, heats up, and trips the switch. Pushing the red button resets the switch. I split the case, removed the overload, and tested it with an ohm meter. If you see an open circuit across the terminals, even after holding down the button, it is probably burned out. If you put a jumper wire across the terminals where the overload switch had been connected, and put the saw back together, and turn it on, if it runs then you know the thermal overload switch is bad. You can run it that way - just the next time you overload the saw the motor can burn out as it is not protected anymore.

I went to the Sears replacement parts website, and found the replacement cost for a new one was pretty high - I forget now but it was at least $25 - 35 as I recall. You can wire in an external thermal overload to do the same function, which is what I did.

Somebody is making a killing. Used to work where they make those motor protectors (before it went to China), and they wholesale for a couple of bucks.

Take the end covers off and check for a broken wire either the starting winding or the run winding. Sears inspected it and said the run needed repair, took it apart and they never opened it the sawdust pushed a wire into the fan and resulted in $17.00 "inspection fee"

the reset button won't work until the saw cools down - about an hour for mine - then u do have to push it in pretty hard
then all is good again

Your reset is bad - I had this same thing happen. I think a new reset is $30-$40. You can find them online by searching the part # (it's on the reset) or take it to your local motor repair shop. This is an easy fix, don't be afraid of it.

Try taking the motor apart and cleaning the armature between the contact plates with some fine emerycloth. What happens a lot of times is the residue from the brushes wearing builds up in the grooves on the armature, effectively grounding the motor out.I've even used a broken hacksaw blade to gouge the grooves out deeper than factory, making sure the brushes are good and everything is clean going back together.Good luck!

I've had that very same problem in the past . Take the motor off the saw . Take a hammer handle & tap around it as you blow that sucker good with air presssure . You may even have to take it to an electrical reapair shop for a good cleaning & ne brushes . If you get it fixed just keep it blown out often .

The reset button IS the fuse. It's a circuit breaker, technically.

Older saw, eh? Could be the motor just gave up the ghost. Check what the other guys have suggested.

You have some good advice below. If it is the switch (this was the case on mine). I found an exact replacement at Ace Hardware. Don"t know the age on yours-mine is well over thirty years old. Jack

I have a 10" radial arm saw that the motor when turned on, just hums. I can turn the motor by hand and is free. When I turn the motor by hand and turn the switch on, the motor will run slow and then throw the breaker in the panel. Any suggestions as to the problem is and how to fix it.
Thanks

You did check the fuse or circut breaker in the panel? If it is good or the outlet works with another devise plugged in, check out the motor or switch. Unplug it, turn the switch on and check if you have a circut through the motor using an ohm meter and the two power prongs in the plug. Check also for a short between the power prongs and the ground prong. If you find a problem work back around the switch to narrow it down to the mortor or switch.
