O/T : Roofing Installation

I know this board is frequented by a bunch of knowledgeable folks, so I"m looking for some advice for when I go to put tin on my cabin.
The frame work is 2x6 rafters, on 2" centers, with 1x4s "tieing the rafters all together". I understand from a strength standpoint, that since the rafters (trusses) look like an "A" when viewed from the side, they are strongest from the top down----
My question is, where does the side to side strength come from?
All of this, because I"m the one who"ll have to get up on it to secure the tin, and I don"t want a disaster.
Any thoughts, or ideas would be welcome. I did design the roof with ME in mind---it has a 3:1 slope....(3" rise per foot of run)

Hi 1945A,

I nerver have liked the new way of letting the sheeting take the frame side stress. I like the old way of using "X" bracing on the frame before the sheeting is installed, a much stronger design.

You can have any SM shop with a power shear, shear some 1-1/2" x 10ft x 20ga galvanized straping and use that to "X" brace under the sheeting. It lays flat enough that it doesn't cause the sheeting to bulge without notching but will hold the frame square.

Okay----
If I'm understanding you correctly, you're saying to put the strips on TOP of the lathing before the tin, right?
Forgive me, if seen this type of work being done before (construction), just never paid a lot of attention to what was going on.
The lathing has gotten the roof tied together pretty good, and it feels solid, but the lateral "quivering" when I grab it has me concerned.
Maybe I'm just being a "nervous Nelly"....

Hi 1945A,

Yep you got it. You can go from the sill plate to the header in a "X". The 45º cross holds the frame from shifting right or left thus adding stiffeness to the frame.

I let flat diagonal braces into the tops of the rafters. Stiffens up the roof extremely well. If you aren't using sheet decking, something is necessary to prevent racking of the whole roof. If your purlins (1xs) are already up, attach the diagonals as best you can to the bottoms of the rafters.

I guess you're not doing a traditional standing seam roof. Good luck.

Your laths will give you a lot of lateral strength, but I would also suggest some braces from ceiling joists to ridge pole, the closer to 45 degree angle, the better.
