I just inherited a set of arch punches (aka gasket cutters or gasket punches). I know that the O.D. of the cutter gets sharpened, not the I.D. What is the best method to sharpen these punches? I am reluctant to grind them freehand. ----- - Any suggestions are greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!

What do you use to strike the arch punches? I"ve been using a regular hand drilling hammer, but I"ve seen a lot of them used with rawhide hammers from a company called Garland? They cushion the shock since it"s not steel-on-steel, which helps. A link to the company is below

A posting in another forum was by a gentleman with a problem that might be similar to your sharpening of arch punches.

He loaned out his grinding wheels and was unable to sharpen several large diameter drills when needed.

This gentleman stated that he had learned to sharpen drills on grinding wheels from several old pros, and he had become skilled in doing so.

Without having his grinder, he tried his belt sander and it did an even better and easier job than grinding wheels, especially in sharpening drills of over 1/4" diameter.

I'm guessing that many of your arch punches are over 1/4" and maybe a belt sander is an efficient way of sharpening them.

I sharpen all my drills on a belt grinder. I find a belt grinder is better in many ways.
