I bought this chainsaw used,
Homelite XL, "UT no. 104444"
"Ser. no. 780870600"

have no manuals. I don't know the year, has no safety devices, would guess '77 - '80. Anyone familar with the saw know the fuel mix ratio?

Thanks, John

Found a manual, 16:1 regular oil, or 32:1 premium oil, so I guess everybodies right.

Unfortunatley the plastic oil tank has a leak in it, have to try some glue or permaseal on it. DOH!

Thanks for all the replies

john

iF THE 'LEAK' IS BECAUSE OF A SMALL ROUND HOLE NEAR THE TOP CORNER OF YOUR FUEL TANK... YOU ARE MISSING A RUBBER 'DUCK-BILLED' CHECK VALVE THAT LETS AIR IN AS THE FUEL IS SUCKED OUT.
Contact me if you can't find one.

I would start off with 16 to 1, if it fouls plugs or has other problems, maybe try a leaner mix. A 16 to 1 say will smoke some, is normal.

I have an XL,blue paint. 16/1 ratio is correct. A saw shop talked me into using 32/1 ratio. After about 15 minutes sawing the engine locked up. I removed the muffler and spark plug, sprayed freely with knocker loose and worked the sprocker nut back n forth gently until it freed up and shot in some pure 2 cycle oil. Started it up and went back to sawing. 20 minutes later-same thing. I repeated the procedure, emptied out the gas, refilled the saw with a 16/1 mixture and the saw is running today. I went back to the saw shop and complained. The guy said OH- sorry, I thought your saw was red, they are 32/1. Traded off the saw for a Hopkins & Allen Forehand 12 ga. yesterday matter of fact.

I have been told that the proper mix is determined by the oil rather than by the engine. I don't know if it's true, but that's the way I do with mine.

Older saws ran 16:1 that is 16 parts gasoline to 1 part oil or 8ozs. to one gallon. They did have a premium oil that you mixed 32:1 or 4 ozs. to gallon. Either one was ok, usually cheaper to run the premium. This was in 1972. Later they made saws to run 32:1. This was to compete with Stihl, who had for years been making their saws to run 40:1.

The place I worked at back then sold Homelite. 32:1 is the recommended ratio. That's 4 oz. to a gal.

Most of the XLs, Super XLs, Super 2s, etc. ran between 25:1 and 32:1. The "one little bottle per gallon" mixes are USUALLY 50:1. I'd use 1 1/2 per gallon, which should put you in the ballpark. We ran our Homelites (both XL and Super XL) at 32:1, but you can adjust it slightly downward if you want.

Should work ok with the little bottles of oil per one gallons of gas mix, like runs in about all of the other little 2 stroke stuff. I have an old Homelite and I use the little bottles of Poulan oil with no ill effects.

I am not a homelite expert, have an XL-903, I think anyway, and it says on the say 16 to one. Have run it that way for years, since buying it used in 76 or 77. Cut about 8 cords a year with it and it has been a good say, a little ragged, but gets the job done. In a way I wish it would wear out so I could get a lighter newer saw.

32 to 1, have a 1978 saw and the best I have used that 3.5 cubic in motor is a power house and still looks new. Keep pumping oil to the bar and it'll last forever.
