Anyone know what the deal is with all those new chain saws on ebay? I asked my JD dealer and he had never heard of a model J3816, and couldn't find any info on them. Just wondering if there is something fishy about this. Thanks.

Amazing. All these opinions in response to this question, and they're all guesses....amazing.

just like i found out about lawn mowers and tv's.these big companys make a model for the discount stores. the regular dealers can't do any repairs as they don't have the parts or even the model #'s in there books. these discount places have there own service people for there product.

I don't know. But I do know that ECHO made chain saws for John Deere. And ECHO is a darn good saw. I had an ECHO chain saw. It was a model 650. A friend borrowed a John Deere chain saw from someone he knew. They were identical saws. The only difference was color. The ECHO was orange , and the John Deere was yellow.

Echo made JD saws a long time ago. From the '70s into the late '80s. Homelite made JD saws after JD bought them, and now that Homelite's been sold Efco makes the saws.

How time flies. At one time , I use to keep up on the chain saw market. Not any more. In my opinion , if I were John Deere , my name would not be on a homelite chain saw. Homelite was a good simple american saw. The last new homelite saw I bought was an XL-12. Would not hold a candle to previous homelites , even of same model. The paint even rubbed off easily , compared to the previous ones. That is when I switched brands. Yes , now that I think about it , that had to be 25 years ago. It seams like yesterday.

I would guess that it's one of the older JD saws made by Homelite. Horrible quality. JD recently started selling nice pro saws made by Efco, so these get liquidated.

It could be a special model number for the company that orinally sold it. I have seen many companies do this so that model numbers cannot be directly compared to their competetion in order to eliminate price matching.

It is made by homelite.I have one I bought from Home Depot a couple of years ago. It's held up pretty good till now.I'm having some problems with it.It gets used quite often and isn't exactly made for the type of use i'm putting it through. If you need a cheaper saw for around the house tree trimming it would be fine, but you can't rely on it for yearly firewood cutting or land clearing.I've learned my lesson.Stick with Sthil!!!!

Where can I get a replacement chain for my John Deere model J3816 saw? I understand it's likely a Homelite, but what Homelite model would be an equivalent? Without a model number of something like it, I can't seem to locate a chain that will work. Ace Hardware cannot find the model number for my 16 inch saw, and all of the Oregon chains they have are either a fraction of an inch too small or a fraction too big. Oregon chain models S54 and S55 are a little too short and S59 is a little too long.
Thanks!
