Help! I believe the firing order for a VF4 is 1,3,4,2, but how are the cylinders numbered? And how can I tell which is #1 cylinder?

If cyl. 1 and 3 are on the the left bank and 2 and 4 are on the right bank and firing order being
1-3-4-2 should #3 fire after #1 on the same bank?
After #1 has fired should the next one not fire on the opposit bank?
Thanks for your help

Facing the flywheel numbers 1 and 3 are on the left, 2 and 4 are on the right. Number 1 should be the closet one to the flywheel.

The cylinder associated with the frontmost connecting rod on the engine is usually number one.
