Hello all,
So far I've been able to get all the info I needed off the board without bugging anyone, but this one is killing me.

My Briggs 5HP tiller motor is leaking oil around the crankshaft and the crankshaft itself has play in it. By looking at the parts explosion on the B&S site, it looks like the cylinder bushing and oil seal are the culprits. The parts sheet says "special tools are needed" for this, and I was wondering which tools I'm going to need, and how much trouble I'm in for.

Thanks guys. This board has helped me out tremendously.

On the flywheel side some of the newer engines have what is called a DU bushing. If yours has this all you need to do is replace that and the seal. If your engine is of the older model, you have to use the special tools required to install this bushing. The tools will cost as much as a new motor (if you can find one). Briggs has stopped making the flat head motor except in the motorsports version (Raptor 3) for kart racing. There may be a few engine shops that can put the bushing in for you. I have the tools to do this I bought when I was racing karts many years ago. You need to check the crank and make sure it is in good shape where the seal runs on it. If it is a seal alone may fix your problem. Briggs made these engines with bearings on the flywheel side also but I doubt you have one of these. Good luck and let me know what you find.

Well, took the engine apart. On the flywheel side the crankshaft rides in a friction bearing cast into the block 1-1/16" long. I guess that's the correct terminology, what I mean is, there is no bushing that I can replace. There is considerable play in the friction bearing on the flywheel side, but the friction bearing on the other end is fine. What I'm thinking about is boring the wallowed out bearing enough to drive a bushing in. I think it's workable. I would have to cut out a piece of the bushing down the whole length to line up with the oil feed at the top (there's a hole at the top of the friction bearing where the oil comes out and a groove that it rides down and drips on the crankshaft).

Clear as mud? Sorry if I used the incorrect terminology. Hope I wasn't too confusing.

Thanks

The motor is on a tiller, and it's at least 20 years old (model 130202-0175). The parts explosion was kinda ambiguous. Guess I'll just tear into it and see what's up.

Thanks guys!

I have a MacKissic LSC 505 leaf shredder, also fitted with a 5hp B and S engine. I have not noticed any leaks but it too seems to have developed some crankshaft play . ( It is not that old either! ) I am wondering if the engine does die on me whether it is possible to replace it with a Honda or a Kawasaki of the same horsepower ( they never seem to go wrong do they! ) has anyone out there done that, and if so is it difficult?

You should be able to replace it with a Honda or Kawasaki. The bolt patterns should be the same. If you have the tank clearances and are able to hook up the throttle linkage.

I would think it would be the same. Most Briggs 5 HP engines are 3/4 shaft and I think 1/8 keway.
