We have just acquired an aggregate that is approximately ten years old. The engine doesn't work at the moment and we are going to repair it. It is a 16 hp four stroke Briggs & Stratton engine. The engine is nothing like we have seen before. There seems to be a chamber on top of the combustion chamber and a valve separating them. The spark plug is on the upper chamber. When the engine is turned by hand the valve opens and shuts regularly. It must be that the valve opens at the end of the compression stroke and lets the plug to egnite the fuel. Is this true? Could you tell me more about this? Why it has such a structure?

Also the rpm governing system seems to be jammed. How does this system work in B&S engines? I don't have any detailed information about this particular engine right now. The governor seems to be working by vacuum.

All the help will be appreciated.

Is there a model #? I have a Briggs repair handbook that runs from 1919 to 1981, I could find some info for you in there. Think I paid 22.00 at a Briggs dealer for it. Bob

Thanks for the reply. I've found a book about these engines at the library which already answered some of my questions. I haven't found any model number in that engine but according the book it might be model 346000.

The thing that I thougt about that combustion chamber stuff was a misunderstanding. The piston is not directly under the spark plug. The valve showing is intake or exhaust valve. I don't know how I could have made such a stupid assumption.

Thanks for the help.
