Can anyone help? I have a Honda 1000watt portable generator which has been stood for five years unused. It has a fault which hasn't been able to be corrected up to date.
It was last started two years ago but it wouldn't put enough electrical power out.Was told it may need re-exciting, but how do I go about this, and what does it mean? Can anyone help?
With it being stood for so long will it be a waste of time, previously it had worked perfectly.
Thanks for any help you could give.
Andy.

The machine has lost it's residual magnetism.
You need to "flash the commutator", to get it back working, and you may need to do it over and over if the machine sits around.
Look on the generator end of the machine, there should be an access ocver that will come off so you can see the slip rings of the rotating field, there are 2 copper rings, with brushes you are looking for on the shaft.
One should be marked + and the other -. Once you've found them, use a 12 volt battery with a backup light bulb, and a couple wires to connect to the brushes, like clip leeds.
Start the engine, connect the - brush to the - side of the battery, connect one side of the backup bulb to the + brush, and MOMENTARILY connect the other side of the backup bulb to the + side of the battery.
The machine should NOW be generating electricity.
You may need to do this a couple times. Do not leave the battery connected more than 5 seconds.
Do NOT do this without the backup light in series with the battery.

Run the machine for a half hour or longer with a load. An excellent load is an old electric frying pan.

A generator should be run every 30 days with a load on it for at least 10 minutes to prevent this situation.

I have another idea. better check out your diodes as they can also develop an open test it by using ohmeter by connecting the ends one way to the other, low reading in one way, high reading in the other way will indicate it is ok. Magnetic charges is generated from within to the stator causing charged magnetic field so the purpose of the rotor is to excite the poles which may be two or four depending on 2 cycle or four cycle engine turning the rotor
