I have a Briggs 5 hp engine on a garden tiller.
Have no spark, cleaned everything but need to know the settings for the points and spark plug gap, also the clearance on the flywheel to the magneto. Any help will be appreciated.

Typical Briggs settings are .020 on the points and .030 on the plug. For flywheel clearance, I cut a piece of paper from a grocery bag, and fold it double. Loosen the magneto coil screws and pull the coil back. Hold the coil with one hand, and place the doubled piece of paper around the magnets on the flywheel. Rotate the flywheel so that the magnets are opposite the legs of the coil, and let the magnets pull the coil toward them. Tighten the screws, and then rotate the flywheel, and remove the piece of paper. The thickness of the doubled piece of paper should give a clearance which will work. I've done this myself, with no problems.

You could also use cardboard from a cigarette package.

Hi. I have a newer 5hp briggs engine with a pulsa carb (model 130212). After rebuilding the moter and putting it all back together, I tried to start it. But the carb severely floods itself with a matter of 2 or 3 pulls, when engine does run, it runs very very rich. I took the carb all apart and everything seems to check out fine, no clogs or anything, what baffles me is that the carb always ran a little on the lean side before the rebuild, I have had this problem in the past with other briggs engines. I’ve always been good with briggs engines, but this one baffles me PLEASE HELP!!

Did you solve your running problem. I have an engine with a similiar problem. The engine has been rebored, and now it struggles to start unless fuel is dropped down the carb.Once started it will only run at higher revs and wont idle.It does seam be running very rich.I`ve cleaned the carb and everything seams ok, but the air screw is right in, and it still seams very rich. Model 130212
type 400601
code 91101107
Does anyone have any advise please.
Cheers
Michael Hagreaves.

I do and yes it will work. The thickness of a box pack will work just fine
