I tried electrolysis (for rust removal) this weekend and was pleased with the results. May be a dumb question, but could copper wire be used between the part and battery clamp?

Used electrolysis with good results. Connected iron part to charger clip with copper wire. No problems. I fully agree with John that copper and iron, electrically connected in a conducting fluid, will cause the iron to be eaten away. This is caused by the "potential" of iron being a little less than that of copper. However, this is only on the order of milliVolts. If you apply 12 or 24 Volts this far outweighs the milliVolts. What I noticed is that BOTH iron AND copper are clean after electrolysis. So as long as the battery charger is doing its job, no harm can be done. HTH Hendrik

1952Henry:

I wouldn't use it on the electrode side as the copper will leach off into the electrolyte, and you can get a funny looking kind of copper flashing on your part being cleaned. Using it on the part probably is not a problem, but I really like iron wire like baling wire.

Why not? Copper is an excellent conductor of electricity. Just don"t ground or shotr circuit the wire.

Yikes!!!

DON'T use the copper wire. If it plates copper on the cast iron part you are stripping, it will set up a "gavanic cell". Don't remember your chemistry? Well, here's and example--> when they started making boats out of iron, they used copper rivets. The iron around them rusted out FAST and the boats sank. The copper will do the reverse of galvanizing and the iron will become the sacrificial metal and will RUST FIRST. Don't want that to happen...
