I NOTICED MY TRACTOR ACTED WEAK AND DIED.
I CHECKED FOR SPARK AT THE PLUGS WITH TIMING LIGHT. I ONLY HAD SPARK AT # 4. MAIN WIRE WAS ERRATIC WITH LIGHT. 12VOLT CRANKING. H-4 MAGNETO. RECENTLY REPLACED POINTS, PLUGS, WIRES, CONDENSOR. AFTER TUNE UP SEEMED TO RUN GOOD. HAVE LESS THAN 4 HOURS ON TUNE UP. NOW BACK FIRES AND WILL NOT START.
LOOKING FOR SUGGESTIONS.
THANKS.

Did your points slip out of adjustment?

Thanks for the assistance with red.
This time the points were ok. (.013 setting).

After reading 1173 tidbits from the tractor discussion archives, I was able to get a clearer understanding of what is supposed to happen. I was able to do a bench test with the magneto.
Thus the main coil was replaced - weak spark / some of the insulation off of the old coil must have heated and dripped onto the magnets below.
I cleaned the rust and debris from the impulse coupling then lubricated it. Reinstalled magneto to the proper timing.
My kill switch was erratic. Replaced it. I still only had spark to a couple of cylinders.
At this time I was only using a timing light to determine if I had spark.
I used my super human brain to figure this one out. I used a 1/4-20 bolt as the spark plug I held it with pliers about 1/4 in. from the block while cranking motor - clearly I had good spark to all cylinders.
Thats when I realized that the spark plugs that were sold to me as part of the tune up kit were Champion d15y. I changed to Champion D21y (2 levels hotter) now I have good spark. She's running great. I can almost start her with the hand crank. My next challenge will be to rebuild the carburator - I see it leaks some gas from gasketed areas.

Any takers for words of wisdom in this department?

Thanks again.
