I am working on a manlift with a vg4d engine. It has been setting over the winter and when I got ready to us it it would not run good had a miss. I have rebuilt the carb it was full of rust have converted it to electronic ignition, new plugs and wires. The problem I having is when you put a load on the engine it will run good for a short time then it slowly starts to faid away. I have put on a new fuel pump and new fuel lines. still having the problem. I have raised the floats about as high as I dare have slight black smoke now at idle. It will take snapping the throttle with no problem. Any and all suggestions appreciated have run out of ideas.

A restricted exhaust will cause a VG4D to vaporlock and lose power.
Another thing could be the valves don't have enough clearance, and as they heat up they expand then don't close all the way!

Those old v4 wisconsins had a bad habit of sticking the valves if they sat for very long.I have dealt with'em on alot of differant equipment that had'em and if they sat much always had to pull the heads and free up the valves and make sure they were sealing good.
