I have a 1948 john deere b that runs and starts fine until it is loaded like in road gear wide open. It does fine until it begins to pick up rpms and then misses out. We have tried adjusting the timing and carb and nothing seems to help.

Worked with Deere during the time of this tractor's hayday. The Wico XB distributor had a bad habit of the brass pivot post for the breaker points wearing away and the points could be set, but not remain accurate at high rpm. The XB Wico distributor was not a sucessful battery ignition for that reason. A magneto or a Delco round distributor would be a good conversion. An electronic ignition changeover that eliminated the points woul allow you to keep it original looking though.

So you have a magneto ignition system. have you tested the spark. Pull a plug wire off put a paper clip in the boot and hold it near a good ground while attempitng to start the engine. What does the spark look like? If it is a FAT, BLUISH-WHITE SPARK, that"s good. If it"s anything else, you need to have your mag checked out.

If the spark is good, since the plugs are sooty( dry fouling) then your mixture is too rich.

What does your spark look like? It should be fat and bluish white. If it"s orangey or red or yellowish, that"s not good. It must be fat, and bluish white. Check your point setting, make sure that your points are not pitted or burned and then your distributor cap and wires are in good shape. Are you using the correct heat range plugs? Are the plugs fouling? DO you have the correct coil?
