I pulled the old A out of a field a few weeks ago. I decided to begin restoring it, and I'm new to this sort of thing. It has not been started for a couple of years. I cannot get the motor to turn over. I don't think it seized, I think it is just gummed up. I hear if you poor kerosene or diesel fuel through the spark plug holes, it will help to break it loose. Any thoughts?

Thank you for your advice. With a little diesel through the spark plug holes and a pry bar through the fly wheel, it turned. Thanks again for your help.

Felt pretty good when it first budged, didn't it?

It did! It was great. Last night I took the carburator off, opened it and found it rusty and moist, with all the valves rusted shut. If you don't mind, give me some thoughts on the best way to clean and adjust it. I would appreciate any advice. Also, is there an easy way to remove the steering shaft, to be able to pull off the sheet metal?

Have you got the manual for it? They're pretty easy to work on but a manual is cheap insurance before you break something or screw up putting it back together...

You might head over to the JD board out here and get some professional opinions at this point. I'm mostly a Case person but inherited two stuck A's, that's how I knew how I'd loosened up. Past this point I'm a rank rookie. Best of luck and keep me informed...I'll be learning from you here shortly...

Hauled my perfectly running 41A to the west coast of Canada from the midwest last fall and when I went to fire her up in spring the engine was stuck? Doubt that it seized all by herself but probably gummed up or a little rust in the cylinders not being used to the damp air out here. Any ideas as to what to do next?

I think your diagnosis is probably correct. I'm not familiar with a 41A, but a little diesel fuel through the spark plug holes, let it set for a few days, then a pry bar thru a hole in the flywheel turned the engine for me. I don't know if the 41A is set up the same way, but the principle should be the same. You may want to venture out to the main board and post the question to allow someone more experienced than me to suggest a solution. Best of luck to you.

Before you try to loosen a JD engine that is stuck, or might be, take off the front cover and loosen the bolts holding the rocker arms, otherwise you can bend a pushrod by forcing the engine to turn over. Soaking them with diesel fuel through the spark plug holes, or by filling the crankcase, with PB, or other products will help. Give it time- days, weeks, etc. Tip a few cool ones while watching the pistons loosen up. It is part of normal restoration procedures, in some areas, almost downright a legal requirement!

I just did two old JD A's that were semi stuck. I squirted a bunch of PB BLASTER in each spark plug hole and let it set a week. Then I took a cheater bar and put it thru the hole in the flywheel and caught a nut on the in side. Eased it up and down until I got a little movement, then just kept it up till it was moving full circle. Not real technical but sure beats a tear-down...Good luck and holler back if you've got questions...
