I have a big industrial front end loader that came with the 300 utility tractor I bought. It works fine but is just solid rust. I want to paint it but don't want to spend alot on it. I plan on just painting it with a brush. What should I do with the rusty surface? I was thinking of just spraying it with some of that rust inhibitor stuff. Looking forward to seeing some other ideas.

I'm with the guys on the rust-oleum. But make sure you do a little preparation first whether it be with the 3m rust remover pad of just an old fashioned wire cup on a 5" grinder. Spraying it with a paint gun as opposed to spray cans will give a better finish and probably be cheaper.

You can use a product called Owatrol, (if it s awailable where you are) just "paint" it directly on to the rust, and then ordinary paint on top. This stuff "kills" the rust, and are awfully cheap
good luck

Here is a page I found that may help in combating rust.

I just did my loader. Used a 3M paint and rust remover pad. It goes on a drill and they make several different versions. It worked great, takes rust and paint off fast and easy. I did the entire loader including prime and paint in a day and a half. Of course, the loader was off the tractor.

I've used a product called "Rust-Mort" by SEM. Their part number is 69504. It's a phosphoric acid solution, brush on application. It neutralizes rust into a hard, dark coating that then is topcoated with paint. All you do is take off flaky rust and then brush on. It goes on quickly. Let it dry, then brush or spray a coat of paint. I've used it on pallet-racks with good results, then used it on the inside of tractor wheels that had rusted pretty badly. I've not taken the tractor tires back off to see how it does there, but it does fine on the pallet-racks. Saves a lot of prep work, and is fine for something that you just want to stop the rusting process from destroying and make it look decent for working. Good luck.

300Randy: I used rustoleum to paint a crawler because of lots of surface rust and too many tight spots to get at easlily. That brand of paint is soft and will fade quickly if kept outside. It did slow up the rust well considering it was a quickie paint job. R.

Rustoleum rusty metal primer, in a bucket, cut 50/50 with acetone. Works wonders for this sort of application. Cutting it with acetone (or some other solvent) is the key. Unthinned, the stuff is far to thick. But cut, it soaks into the rust wonderfully, and holds it at bay for years without even a covering of paint to seal it.
