I have a John Deere 14T baler with a Wisconsin TFD engine on it, and I shot a spark plug right out of the aluminum head when it backfired. Does anybody make anything to repair this like a heli-coil, and can I do it without taking the cylinder head off?

OLD is right.. pull the head to fix. While a heli-coil -might- work.. I'd wonder if it sealed good. My prefered choice of repair would be to drill and tap for a larger size plug, if you can get down to good metal for the threads.. or drill and bush ( yellow metal? ), then tap the busing, and use standard plug.

A good machinish could probably fix this.. never know.. might find a guy doing aluminum work that could weld up, drill and retap..

S.G.,

A good machine shop will have either Heli-Colis or Thread-Serts to repair the head.

The Thread-Serts are a solid insert, but they require drilling and tapping the hole larger than needed for a Heli-Coil.

Those thread serts must have been what I have seen before.. it looked like they drilled and tapped an OS hole in the head, and then installed a bushing that accepted the oem plug.. must be the same thing.

They should have a heli coil for doing that but I would still pull the head to do that fix, reason is you don't want the shaveings in the cylinder to be eaten up by the piston/rings
