Putting the 51'G back together. Does anyone know if the rod caps normally have equal shims from one side to the other? (on the same rod) I would think so, but wasn't smart enough to keep track of the shims when I took it apart. We made the shims equal, but couldn't turn it over after we tightened it up.

Im guessing your talking about the babbit style bearings. The answer to your question is NO. They most likley will not have the same amount of shims on both sides. You will now need to start over and recalculate the amount of shim you"ll need on both sides. It will take some time but its no big deal to do it. I dont think theres a spec sheet that tells the exact amount on each side as all cranks are a little different.

Are you talking about shims under the caps themselves? Between the rod and cap?

Hello 1000yards
The connecting rods should have clearance on both sides of them . Each engine has that clearance and you need to look it up. You may not have enough clearance on the journal side of the crank.
When you have side clearance you are able to rock the rod from side to side. But if it is tight on the crank as well you may not be able to do so.
Guido.
