I know you are an IH guy, but have you had any experience or heard of what can be done to a JD G carb to help the HP? DLTX 51.

Whats all been done to your G?? Ive tuned a few, got into the carbs a little, nothing real drastic,,,, just made sure it was getting enough good fuel thru the main load jet.. Had a G in the shop I think,,, 3 years ago,,,, had a .125 kit in it,, had 115 psi on each cyl on cranking speed. Made like 45 hp, but pulled down below the 540 pto rpm, it would lug very hard, would bout wrap my dyno needle back around to 0!!! I know lots of fellas that wanna rev em up and go, but if they go faster, and they pull down hard,,, it might suffer on the low side,,, so think of the rpm ranges you intend on pulling,,, does it run at 10% overand never drop rpm (lots of power ) or does it drop way below rated rpm and pull thru its lugging torque curve??? if its really working the engine,, best advice is to tune it for that rpm where its lugging,,, surely, a few adjustemnts in that area, for carb adjustments and timing settings will improve, and smooth out the massive torque these ol 2 lungers make!
The ol G I worked on,,, needed a few things,,, new tension spring on the governor, and the linkage was out of adjustment,, but under a hard load,,, if you can push on the governor linkage and open the carb up more,,, its not opening up the carb fully, and that can rob a few ponies and lots of torque,,, once the governor was opening up the carb under the load, it seemed to get better! Thas what I had seen on em,,, I could push the linkage ahead and fully open the carb,,, once I got the governor to open it up, Id say it jumped 3 hp. I know this isnt much on specifics,,, but hope it helps a little,,,, ChadS ChadS3@hotmail.com

Thanks for the thoughts Chad. No thanks to the ridiculous rants of "What". I checked with Robert's out in Iowa who I'm sure would do a fine job but they say they are 20weeks behind. It can't be that tough. I'm just not smart enough (What?) to know the correct things to do.

Yep, was in school! 4 years of FFA, Vocational Agriculture, soil judging. Also went thru the full 10 years of 4H, 10 year award, Showed horses, pigs, and exhibits,, Advanced electric, and advanced models,,, (model cars) was even the president of out electric club for 2 years!! May not be a degree holder,,, but I had fun, and learned alot. Support your local 4H and FFA. They go hand in hand. 4H fairs are where I first seen my tractor pull, they even had a class for 4H members only! Fascinating.. right? I grew up on a farm, my dad, my grandfather, and his father were all farmers, our whole community is a farming community, we worked in a machinery repair shop, millwright, loved climbing those 150 ft grain legs to haul up a 200lb drive engine by a rope, with only a small flag pole to hold onto,,,, no nets there fellas. Hey What???, Your line is getting old. Do you despise everyone without a HS diploma? I know some highly respected & successful people without a diploma, & I know some college grads that are complete jerks that don't have enuf sense to get out of the rain. You must have a very high opinion of your self. Why don't you tell us about how successful that diploma has made you?

I, like you, know some very brillant and capable folks with little formal education. However, your remark suggests that knowledge and education are detrimental. Sounds like something that Archie Bunker would say. From a guy that is smart enough to like Prairie Gold I would have hoped for more. best, Yeoman

Phil, Thanks for your comments. I don't feel that education is bad & I should have expressed my thoughts better. Education is not the measure of a man & it bothers me to see someone being mocked by not having much schooling. I have an engineering degree & I know that some of my fellow classmates thought much too highly of themselves. Maybe I've said too much - if so I apologize.

No offense taken, no apology needed. My degree is in liberal arts; something that every farm boy needs to propely commune with cows, chickens, pigs, etc. You made a valid and very worthy point. Education is not the measure of one's worth. Although it will gets some laughs in most places, qualities of character and integrity still are important in my world. My close friends I regard as "brothers". They are distinguished by the above qualities, abundantly seasoned with kindness. Life is good. best, Yeoman
