Can anyone tell me what my options are for a better starter for a late B? It mounts UNDER the tractor. I can drill new holes if needed. Just don't know what my options are. My arms are tired. Thanks in advance.

Thanks for the tips guys, I think since I've got the block back out, I'm going to just put some petcocks in it.

Had it running yesterday. Something isn't quite right though. Not sure exactly what it is, making a funny noise. Say this out loud really fast "CHOMP, CHOMP, CHOMP". Sounds like that... Might be compression knock (compression is higher than it was supposed to be - long story, was supposed to be 10:1, it's actually 12.8:1) - but I've never actually heard it before... Yeah, could be that, could just be that the pistons are a little loose til it warms up, could have something hitting. Call me a chicken... I'm going to tear it down and check things out... Any way you look at it, I want to take a little off the piston to drop that compression.

She's still virgin with the new 5.75" block, so I'm afraid I'll break something. I've got a 6.125" block almost ready to go... I'll try to send you some pictures tomorrow.

I guess you could just have Petcocks..open them before you crank it up and close them afterwards.. Seen plenty "Built" "A" Pullers start them that way..

Had it running..?? I sure would like to hear it...!!

I have a late A and ran into pretty much the same problem. The problem with the bottom mount starters is that any good starter you'll find will have too short of cone, and the solenoid is in the way to mount it in the stock location. There is much more involved than simply drilling new holes to make the bolt pattern line up. About the only worthwhile solution is to switch everything over (flywheel, starter bracket/inspection cover, etc) to that from an early model with the top mount set up, and then you should be able to find a gear reduction high torque diesel starter, not to mention that it will bolt right in without having to tweak or redrill any holes. About the most you may have to do is some very minor clearance grinding to open up the main hole which the starter mounts into the bracket, it won't take much if any at all. You'll also need to do a little bit of wiring work as these starters are keyswitch/push button type as they have a solenoid for the gear kickout.
