I'm trying to remember who had the original Allison engines in tractors. I know the Allison team in Shabbona Illinois had two UB's with allisons. The Gerdes Brothers from Danville Illinois had one in an Oliver 1850 as did Ralph Chaimberlain in Bcyrus Ohio. Craig Young from Sidell Illinois had one in an F-30 and Bill Newlon had one in a G-1000 that had originally been set up by the Allison team. These were the original 6 from back in 1972 and 73. After that I don't remember. Any help would be appreciated.

i believe it was 1976 at the ionia free fair, my younger brother and i had worked our way into the infield to watch ej run a couple of test pulls on double ugly. when completeing the runs he idled past us but not without burrping the throttle. Two huge chunks of sod were instantly cadapulted 10 feet into the air, and in our addalsent minds a new hero had been discovered.

E J POTTER, I remember that in the early 70's I got a IHC F30 that was being used to compact garbage in the landfill at Fairfield, Illinois. I sold EJ the F30 and delivered it to his barn in Michigan, must have 25 or more Allison engines in all state of repair. The next time I saw the F30 it had a Allison in it.

Wasn't it in the late 60's or early 70's that Great Britian sold off hundreds of WWII Allison engines as military surplus?

In Sept of 1969 I attended the 1969 M&W Gear CO pull and farm show at LaPlata,MO.Also in August of that year I attended the Pleasant Hill,ILL tractor pull.I have pictures from both of those pulls and have posted pictures of them on here before.

At each of those pulls the Allison Team from Shabbona,ILL was there with a UB MM with an Allison and a G-1000 MM with an Allison.1969 was the only year they used the G-1000 as in 1970 they switched to another UB MM.They pulled the 15,000 lb Unlimited class which was dropped down to 12,000 lbs in 1970 or 71.

In 1969 the only tractors to give the Allison Team a run for the money were several 8V-71 Detroit powered 4020's,several G-1000 MM's with turboed 800 MM irrigation engines running on LP,and ND Harrisons twin turboed 220 AC from Pittsfield,ILL.

Bill Newlon was at each of these pulls with a G-1000 MM with a turboed 800 MM irrigation engine. He went Allison a few years later probably getting the G-1000 Allison powered tractor from the Allison Team.

In 1969 the Allison team were the only ones to pull with V-12 Allisons so they were the first.Theres a nice story about them in an early NTPA Puller mag.I have every single issue of the Puller since the first one.Ralph Chamberlain probably came out in 1970-71 with the Honker 1850 Oliver Allison.

Lee,I still run in to Gene somewhere most every year and we talk over the old days of pulling.I saw him at the Ft Scott,KS steam show this year.Thats a tough 28-44 Oliver that he pulls.

He must have built the 55 MH-Allison puller in the mid to late 70's.I think he went thru about (10) 55 MH rear ends pulling the 7-9 Mod class.

E.J. Potter lived North of me near Ithica, MI. I met him a couple years ago (older fella theese days). I bought his book and he signed it for me. It is interesting AND hilarious. No one is as daring or genious as he is to this day. You should see his other projects. Chevy motorcycle, Allison powered Dodge Dart, jet tricycle, etc.

EJ took a trip off the end of Onondaga Dragway on his V8 motorcycle. A little while later he showed up with the Ugly tractor.

I used to watch him pull at the Ingham County Fair. Always funny to see it idle up on the Rotax snowmobile engine, back into position, and then fire up the V-12's.

He built one for a lady puller that routed the supercharger over 24 Hillborne injectors, on alky. It never seemed to hook up like his old ones but boy did it sound sweet.

Nothin like 496 chevys hitting a harmonic with the old wooden grandstand, but EJ would always be in the hunt.

'Cept the time he broke the planetary and sent a tire downtrack at about 20 MPH. People stayed off the infield rail after that...

EJ Potter from Michigan was probably the most successful Allison Engine powered tractor puller genious. He ruled the roost with his two tractors "Ugly" and "Double Ugly" for the single and twin motor versions. I saw him pull many times and never remember seeing him lose. Those tractors always seemed to have enough power to win. Almost like he could sandbag and still win.

I use to watch E.J. pull at the Ionia Fair. I went just to watch him. It was in the 70's and he was an interesting person.

Ken Legband from Kinnard NE had the Allison Wonderland. Wayne's tractors have all been "River Rat". Arnold Boyer from Il, Ron Barga from Ohio, and a couple of other guys from IL were among the first also, but the Allison Team were the first I remember. Forinash and Chickering in Iowa followed Longnecker pretty quick after he put his in. At one time, I think we hade eight pullers from Iowa running Allisons at the same time. Headley with his Hemi's and me with my Chevy's became the minority!

Scott,I first remember seeing Wayne Longnecker at the NTPA Western Nationals in Bethany,MO in 1970.He was pulling a F-30 Farmall with a 427 Chev that had 2-4's on a tunnel ram.The Allison came a couple of years after that.He must have been a teenager back then.Hes sure one of the long time Iowa pullers.

The first blower motor tractor ever was Claude Woodworth from Ursa,ILL in about 1970.It was a F-30 Farmall with a blown 427 Chevy with 2-4's up top.I remember him pulling the 7000 Mod class at Bethany,MO in 1971.Someone talked him in to pulling the 12,000 Unlimited class and he did it giving the Allison Team a run for the money. He had a bunch of 100 lb IH weights hanging on the F-30 which only had 23.1x30 tires..I think he toasted the automatic tranny.I have a picture of him doing it.

Lanny Kay out of Wheatland,Iowa had an F-30 with twin carbed 427 Chevs and Gerald Dorscher had a F-30 with twin blown Hemis.

I can remember Bob Chickering running a blown Ford 427 Cammer in the Inch Pincher. The Iowa boys used to come down to Bethany,MO all the time so got to see most of them.
