I have an unstyled 1937 JD A with what I believe to be a powerblock although it doesn't have POWERBLOCK cast on it with what would be 6-1? as well. It doesn't have petcocks. My grandpa says it is a powerblock but other people on these forums say that no powerblock fits the unstyled A so I am asking the experts on engines and blocks here on tractorshed and am wondering if any powerblocks that were made fit the unstyled A? My grandpa did have to modify both the upper and lower water pipes to get them to fit on this block.
Thanks

A 6-1 will bolt right in. You will have to use a styled upper water pipe piece and a styled cylinder head.

Do the spark plugs go in at an angle or are they 90* to the cylinder?

They do go in at a slight angle and the paint under the green paint is yellow. Why did they use a styled head on these engines? More compression? If my calculations are correct it should have 367.56 ci with 6x 6.5 bore and stroke. My grandpa also says that he may have had it bored .125 so that would give me 383.04ci with a 6.125x 6.5 engine. What kind of horsepower can I expect from this with a DLTX 51 carb off of a G?
Thanks for the replies

It uses a styled head because, like you said others have told you before, the 6-1 power block was not intended for an unstyled tractor, but it just happens to bolt in w/o many problems. How much compression it has depends on if it has an early styled head or a late styled head on it. What kind of manifold does this tractor have(casting #'s, gas or all fuel)?

I would ballpark guess the HP somewhere in the mid 40's.

I didn't find a casting number on the manifold but it looked pretty tubular compared to the old all-fuel manifold (A36R) which was originally on the tractor. I think the new manifold is a gas manifold. If you could tell me where the cast # on the head is I could get that.

To get the head casting #, you have to take the valve cover off. The number will be between the intake valves.

OK, Then it will remain a mystery.
