I have a 1944 John Deere A, and a 1949 John Deere A. The 1944 is bored .45, the 1949 is stock. Yesterday I took the plugs out of my 1944 and noticed the piston goes past the spark plug hole all the way to the head. My 1949 only comes right up to the spark plug hole. Both have the same block. Did some come from factory like this or is my 1944 stroked.

Measure the length of the blocks to compare the 44 to the 49. The block is longer in the newer tractor. The blocks are different. The older tractor probably has aftermarket pistons made for gasoline which are taller than the original gas or kerosene pistons.

Anybody know about how much power those pistons make. All I know is that I hooked it to a telephone pole draged it around and that didn't phase it, I hooked it to a WD Allis with 14inch wide tires on the back and that didn't phase it, and my tractor has 12.4-38 on it. That old Allis didn't have a chance.

The pistons that go to the top are more than likly M&W pistons and since it is bored 45 over, it proably has the higher compression pistons in it. If you ever take it apart you will see that there are notches in the sides of the pistons so the plugs arent covered up. Jon

Get Gary to come borrow my compression checker and compare both of them.I agree with johndeere-john on the pistons. The 44 should have a significant amount of power over the other one.My G had the piston come up halfway of the spark plug hole and it had no extra stroke.
