Hi I would like to start pulling and need some help from the great pulling gods at this site. I currently own a '46 H and was wondering if it was worth trying to set it up for pulling or if I should buy a M? What are some easy ways to get power out of an H and still be original/stock? Do I need more weight in the back or less cuz some put pressed steel on and some put weights.I have a couple sets of rear weights to use. What about front weights? About how much weight is needed? The H I would like to be kinda close to original because its my first tractor but an M I would not really care. Also I currently have 12.4-38 Firestones on my H with good tread. Should I use these or 13.6-38 with little tread left? Any hints? Cheap hints that is. Thanks a lot.

Matt

There are a few simple cheap things you can do to an H if you decide to pull it. Replace your plugs, wires, points, and condenser. Install a straight pipe. If you have a plow or disk pull the gutts out of it until the engine gets to HOT on the temperature guage. Set the low idle ajustment on the carb according to the book. Then ajust the main fuel mixture screw until she smokes a little at a idle but runs good wide open. Then remove the govenor side plate, its toward the front of the engine on the carburator side. There are two stop ajustment bolts, the bottom one should be ajusted so the arm can move as far as possible. You may want to note the amps at wide open before and after you ajust the govenor to make sure you ajusted it the right way. The engine may surge at wide open when it is not under a load but it should even out under load. A carb rebuild is money well spent. When you pull take the air breather off the carburator. The intake is relitivly small so it needs all the air it can get. As for the tires and the weights it all depends on the track. It will likely take a pull or two or three to figure out what you need.

Hi, I pull a H and believe me, you can win with a H. I'm looking at a shelf full of first place tropy's. There is a lot you can do with the H engine, believe me if othere tractors are kicking your butt, they are not "stock". If you want help on the H, email me and I will do what I can to help.

sounds like your h isn't real stock either. A STOCK H doesn't have much of a chance against the MM, Allis and olivers!!!!! !!!!! If enough money is spent, most anything can beat other stock tractors.

I have a '48 H that I pull with, our club's rules say that the tractor must be stock with the exception of oversized pistons. we also can only use factory type weights that were available for the tractor, no suitcase type weights. I use 13.6x38 tires, one set of tire weights on the back. I pull in the 3500-4500lb class and my tractor weighs in at 4480 lbs.
My tractor was overhauled using oversized High compression pistons and very light porting of the head.
This tractor will probably never win it's class but it does a respectable job and it suprizes alot of those people that think H's never pull well! The power to weight ratio is just about perfect as I usually spin out just befor it would power out. It does make full pulls when the track conditions are right.
We don't pull for prizes or anything, usually I get beat by the unstyled john Deere A's with mega buck engines that are nowhere nears stock, They shouldn't even be allowed to pull by our rules but it's all just for fun, so who cares?

Take an M farmall over the H put big an engine in it out of a 1466 and claim it is stock, they will fit, just stick some MD decals on it and claim to your grave that it is stock. HECK you might as well cheat like everyone else GOODLUCK

Have been pulling for a few years now, and have never seen a IH "H" that did well. It will be in the same weight classes as an allis WD-45 and the olliver 77,88's which all seem to have a much better HP to weight ratio. I've seen a pile of Super M's (which have a slightly bigger engine than the M) that do very well. We have a super H (slightly more HP than an H), and don't bother to take to pulls anymore. Easier to just throw the money out the window, less work involved. We currently pull a IH400, (M version with a TA). You need to get some rules from the clubs/pulls in your area where you will be pulling so you know what is allowed and what isn't. Most have a divion 1 (farm stock) class for beginners. Great place to start having fun. With a stock M weighing in at 5000# (aprox), you can pull up to the 7500# area. Again, check to see what types of weights they will allow, some won't allow suitcase weights in farm stock classes. Also check for allowed tire sizes. I suppose you can bore&stroke your H, and many other $$$$$ things to make it pull. I know of a guy who has put an allis WD45 together from scratch for less than $800, (including origional cost of tractor) plus now has an extra engine to put in something else. I KNOW he'll kick our Super H all over the place if we tried it!!! It's like one older mechanic told me when I was searching for some "cheap" HP, "Nothing is free, how fast do you want to go and how much can you afford?" Good luck!!!!
