My brother-in-law and myself are in the process of building an Allis Chalmers WD-45 "pulling tractor". While this is not exactly a restoration we are striving for something close. At this point the motor is out, most all bolt on pieces are off leaving only the major components and we are close to having everything sand blasted. Where I work we use a phosphate wash prior to paint on the machinery we build and this is what we plan to do with the tractor. My question is should we prime it or not? We are using Tractor Supply Co. store paint with the Naptha thinner.
Also I have read that it is a good idea to add hardner when using this paint. What kind of hardner do we get? Any replies would be greatly appreciated.

I have not used and am not familiar with TSC paint. The sandblast and phosphate wash is certainly the absolute best way to go for prep of the base metal. Typically a high quality primer (2 part epoxi comes to mind) would be used when that amount of care has been used to prepare the metal. What does the TSC label say for bare metal? If you are going to use thinners and hardeners, you should follow the TSC label directions for those materials. Compatibility of components is very important in most modern finishes. Mixing and matching components from different manufacturers or using "generic" materials is generally frowned upon and can lead to poor results.
