I didn't ask Santy Claus for one, but one thing I have on my list for later is a spray paint gun, suitable for painting old tractors and equipment. I don't know much about them, other than they spray paint. What are some good brands and features to look for? The brands I've heard of are Binks and DeVilbis. Also, where's the best place to buy? Finally, what sorts of trash/water filter systems would be best to connect to my air line?

Thanks,
Al

A good paint gun will depend on your budget and the size of your air compressor. If you are going to paint very much it would be worth it to get a good gravity feed HVLP gun, they will run from $150 (Devibliss Finishline II) up to $400 for a Sata NR 2000. Most of the better HVLP guns are going to pull 12-18 cfm so you need a pretty good sized air compressor. I have a Sharpe Platinum HVLP gun that only uses 7.5 cfm and is a professional quality gun, I know of a few bodyshops using them but it was a $350 gun. If you want to save some money check out Ebay, they just sold a Platinum for about $150. For new guns the link below has as low of prices as I have seen and has outstanding service also.

Cliff,

Thanks for the info. How big would you consider "A pretty good size" air compressor for a HVLP gun?

Al

The common 5hp 60 gallon vertical compressors generally put out about 10-12 cfm @40 psi. If you can find a cfm @40psi rating on your compressor that is the best way to figure it. Even if you get a standard high pressure paint gun you will need 8-10 cfm and with a gun like that you will only get half as much paint on the surface as you will with a hvlp gun so spending a little more on a hvlp gun will quickly pay off on paint savings.
