Finishing up some body work on tractor tin and I have a question. I started with bare metal and have used regular body filler (Bondo) and have shaved and sanded that down. Next step is the spot putty for small imperfections, scratches and edge-feathering, etc. Should I put a coat of primer on the bare metal/body filler before using the spot putty? Or should I just used it as things are now (body filler and bare metal)?

Spot putty, at least the type I have used is nothing but primer surfacer in a thick form. The problem with using it to fill imperfections that are very deep is it takes a long time for it to dry completely. The surface drys quick but when you sand it down and paint over it the imperfections show back up a few months later as it drys out. A better way to fill those inperfections is is by thinning your body putty with fiberglass resin or by getting a small can of putty that is already thinned for that purpose, I think it is called finnishing putty or something like that. Another way is with multible thin coats of primer surfacer that are allowed to dry between coats. If your decent with the putty and sanding a couple coats of primer surfacer sanded inbetween should put you in good shape. To answer your question it depends on which primer you are using. When using a two part epoxy primer most recomend it be put on first, under all fillers. If you are using a one part primer like Rustolium that should go over top of any repairs.
