I tried to get an answer in a post down a little lower here but no ones looking at it any more I guess. I was just wondering why you would use oven cleaner in place of a paint stripper? Is there places were one is better then the other. Just curious.

I have been useing oven cleaner that I buy at the Dollar Stores for several years. I buy a dozen cans at a time. It works the same as the 3.00 stuff, what ever the brand, only it costs a third less. I scrape off the heavy grease then I spray it on and when it starts to look dry I respray just enough to make in look moist. After several hours I spray it off with a pressure washer and most all of the old paint is removed along with the grease and oil. I have just started to use a new product for cleaning oil and dirt off metal parts made by Castrol called Super Clean. Seems to work well but does make your hands sting a little untill you get it rinsed off

Randy, oven cleaner cleans off the grease, and does a fabulous job of it, paint stripper removes paint.
I've not experienced any paint being removed by oven cleaner, and I've used it for years. I don't leave it on more than about 10 minutes though, I guess it might remove paint, but never tried it.

Oven cleaner removes paint big time. EZ-off seems to be the best, but is expensive. I have tried Strypeeze and other cheaper paint removers, but much prefer oven cleaner for metal.

My procedure is to spray it on thick at the end of one day and then pressure wash it off the next day. Prior to pressure washing I use some Phosphoric acid to neutralize the lye in the oven cleaner so I don't kill the grass with the runoff. The Phosphoric is handy to get rid of the rust after the oven cleaner does its thing. (Get it at Home Depot in the paint dept.)

Paint usually comes off clean, leaving nothing but bare metal. Where there were several coats, I have had to do it twice. Even little items benefit from this. I use it as mentioned, neutralize it, then use the wire wheel to grind off the paint. After the oven cleaner no effort is required with the wire wheel to remove the paint. By the way, EZ-Off doesn't seem to bother rubber or plastics, but I have been carefull not to test it too thoroughly on anything important.

Just don't get the oven cleaner on the serial number tag or anything else that is aluminum like a magneto.

Agreed. Lye and aluminum don't mix well. Just look at Drano.
