Last year I bought my Ford 1958 861 diesel that was completey restored. I paid probably too much for it but it was a great condition. The biggest thing I liked was the paint job. It was as perfect as it could be. Sheet metal was straight and it looked like glass. I was told that it was clear coated, which I have since confirmed, but no other info on the paint. I guess I should have asked.
The reason I went this way as I had the experince of rebuilding my other 2 Ford tractors from the ground up including painting.
Long story short I did struggle with the metal work and the painting but it worked out OK. I know the untold hours that go into a project like this.
So I have my 3 tractors in the yard and a contractor drops a later on, of course the 861. Big dent and ladder skid marks on 1 side of the hood. I was quite upset but thought that I could handle the repair job.
Ding the dent out, fill, sand etc and then I check to see if I can match the color on the tractor to what I have.
I have some various paints around and I thought I had exact match from the Tisco brand. i painted a small part and laid it on the hood to see if it would match and even though it looked pretty darn close i don"t think it is . If I have my bright light on it and it is perpendicular to the surface they look like they match. But yet if I change the angle my part is darker then what the hood is.If I turn off my light and just use ambient light the part looks darker.
So I am pretty sure it is not a match, and neither are the other 2 paints I have that are supposed Ford Gray.
So the question is, since I am NOT capable of repainting the entire hood, console etc as good as what is there now and I don"t want to chance a color mistach patch doing it myself, what should I do now?
If I take the tractor to an auto body shop would they be able to match the color and do the repair or do I need to search myself and find the color that matches it? That seems like an impossible task. Is it possible whoever painted the tractor mixed their own, in which case I will never find a match.
Frustrated and PO"d....
Any help or suggestions welcome...

a good body shop should be able to match the paint without any great difficulty. it sounds like it is a base clear urethane. we have our own mixing system at my shop, and can custom mix and tint any color. the shop can do a blend refinish on the hood, and get your color match.

If you know the person who sold the tractor, and if he painted it, ask what he used. If it was mixed it has a code. As you have decided, you are not going to match that color with premixed paints, unless it was actually painted with premixed paint. If you can't find the information, use the 861 code, go to PPG. DuPont, etc and used their code. Have a pint mixed first, if it does not match, the dealer can change the toners and get it pretty close. You can also take a small part and get it matched, although this does not always work it may be worth a try. You also need to know if the clear was part of a base clear system, or if it was simply clear coated over single stage paint. As I stated before you need to paint the whole hood, unless the dent is completely isolated, otherwise you will always see where it was touched up. Body shop can do it, you won't like their price. The link, courtesy of Rod(NH), is for PPG codes, the color you want may be there, the PPG codes can be crossed to other brands. This will work ONLY if the tractor was painted with mixed colors.
